Alternate Spring Break 2000

Blowing Rocks Preserve
Hobe Sound, Florida


MISSION

Blowing Rocks Preserve is a 73-acre barrier island sanctuary. The preserve protects a diversity of natural habitats for threatened and endangered nesting sea turtles, shorebirds, migratory birds as well as small mammals. Volunteers will assist with habitat restoration: invasive plant removal, native plant nursery and restoration work, trail building, and trail maintenance. Local attractions include the beach, Boca Raton area, and exposure to local wildlife.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Restored native habitat conditions in various areas surrounding the Conservancy
  • Aided in the propagation of nursery plants and shrubbery
  • Successfully cleared invasive plants from native shrubbery
  • Cleared trails and removed plant overgrowth

  • Canoeing with alligators at the Everglades Youth Conservation Camp
  • Hittiing the beach everyday after work at the Conservancy
  • Working with Hamilton College Students
