Penn

The Penn chapter of Amnesty International promotes the larger organization’s vision of a world where all individuals are guaranteed their human rights.

Our group meets twice each month for general body meetings where we discuss current human rights issues, write letters/sign petitions, and plan for future events. Typically, during our meetings one group member gives a brief presentation about a pressing rights issue and we sign petitions related to this topic. Furthermore, we coordinate at least one Amnesty sponsored event each month that is open to all. In the past, these events have included speakers, movie screenings, demonstrations, and coffee houses. Some of the issues we have focused on include torture, genocide, prisoners of conscience, and women’s rights. Check out our past events section for more details.

We encourage all levels of participation and hope to see you at our next meeting!

Amnesty International is an independent worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. Specifically, the movement work towards:

the release of all prisoners of conscience;
fair and prompt trials for political prisoners;
an end to torture, executions, and the death penalty.

In pursuit of the organization’s vision of a world where all people have access to their rights, AI undertakes research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.

AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.

AI has a varied network of members and supporters around the world. At the latest count, there were more than 1.8 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights.
