Margaret Beale Spencer holds the Board of Overseers Professorship of Applied Psychology and Human Development in the Graduate School of Education (GSE), and a secondary appointment in Psychology (Arts & Sciences) at UPENN. She directs the Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Development (ISHD) specialization in GSE as well as the programming and research of the W. E. B. Du Bois Collective Research Institute; additionally, she is responsible for the direction and research efforts of the Center for Health Achievement Neighborhoods Growth and Ethnic Studies (CHANGES).


Spencer earned the PhD from the University of Chicago, Committee on Human Development. Her basic program of developmental research and its application with diverse youth focuses on resiliency. She has designed, implemented and evaluated numerous community-based programming efforts. Spenceršs scholarship includes having published over 90 articles and chapters, co-edited three volumes, awarded 40 grants from federal agencies and foundations, and received numerous awards in recognition for her program of research and its application. The most recent recognition of her accomplishments is the 2005 American Psychological Association Public Interest Senior Career Award.


Margaret Beale Spencer and her husband of 38 years, Dr. Charles Louis Spencer, are the proud parents of three wonderful adult young people.
