Philly Phlyer Race Weekend
March 8/9, 2008
First off my hat is
definitely off to both Johann & Joe for putting on such a fantastic
event, despite conditions. The aphorism "When nature hands you
lemons, you make lemonade" could've been coined for them on Saturday.
The switch from RR to Crit was smooth and pretty darn fast. As a
former multi-event, high profile race director, I was wildly impressed
with their quiet and confident demeanors, and their seemingly calm but
firm hand on the proceedings.
Better yet, my sons
James, Evan, Sean, their friend Chris, and yours truly had an awesome
time covering the intersection of Church & Dean Streetss and the senior
apartments (where my mom Nita Innes once lived) in front of turn 3. We
were kept busy enough to not be bored, somehow had just enough spare
clothes so that we did not freeze, and had just enough food and drinks
so that we did not starve. And a special note to Bianca, our pizza
delivery person - my boys were cracking up for the rest of the day
after your last pizza run - when one of them accidentally twisted his
slice to the side, a truly impressive stream of water slid off. And so
the others did the same and observed the same phenomena :- ). The rain
actually made the day for us. Please do put us down for the sag
wagon if the RR course is back in 2009.
Anyway, I did manage to
squeeze off a few shots of the action. In terms of light and
conditions, I just couldn't resist, despite the risk to my camera.
Yeah, they're kind of blurry and sometime foggy, and mostly not all
that well composed, but maybe I captured just a little bit of that
uniquely positive but always intense collegiate racing experience.
