Whitmore Cup
November 22, 2008
So this past weekend
we had our first true cycling race weekend of the year,
traveling all the way to eastern LI to race in Southampton. After
the previous year's race had been 75 degrees this time of year, we
were treated to a balmy 27 degrees with high winds on Saturday,
which took the wind chill to the single digits. Saturday's course
was highly technical, yet was fast due to the frozen ground. Max's
chain finally held up to his massive torqueing and he try as I
might, could not keep up with this emerging cyclocross star. While
our showing of 20th (Max) and 25th (myself) were not super
impressive for 29 starters, on the collegiate level we had our
best races yet, scoring a total of 29 points. Later in the day, I
was treated to watching my high school brother Alan's first race
which he did on his mountain bike.
Saturday night we
were treated to an awesome Italian feast prepared by my mom before
rising the next morning to do the course in reverse. Dave Hilbert
showed up in true Hilbert fashion. Sunday morning, with his new
road bike...to race cross? we were skeptical, but if there was
anyone who could pull this off, it would be hilbert
After having
generally disliked the course the first day, I was surprised to
see how much I really liked the 2nd day, which was Saturday's
course in reverse. After Max got a better start on Sunday, max
again left me in his dust and pounded the Rutgers opposition for a
3rd place collegiate finish, and I again finished 6th collegiately.
Hilbert didn't finish too far behind, and wound up beating people
on cross bikes, and scored his FIRST COLLEGIATE POINTS (5) in the
men's C field no less.

Thus concludes
Penn's inaugural collegiate cyclocross season. I spoke to
the cross commish and we were able to fix any points issues that
may have existed now that i understand the individual and team
scoring system (Ross and Nathan should be receiving points for
hpcx and beacon)
A big thanks goes
to Jim Innes, who encouraged me to buy a cross bike last year
and first got me interested in the sport
