Unfortunately the
nice weather of the past couple weeks was nowhere to be found, as
the day started off pretty frigid. The course was also very
different then the Hillbilly Hustle in many aspects in terms of
its terrain and the skill techniques strengths it played to.
However, my
conviction that cross will one day be even more popular then road
racing both on the UPenn level as well as the national level was
in full force. While it definitely does not hurt to have a cross
bike, the true beauty of cross on the collegiate level seems to be
the ability to use any sort of mountain bike for a couple races.
Even with all the deals we try to get for the team, road cycling
is still an inherently expensive sport and still has a very high
start up cost, which becomes difficult for the entry level racer
to justify when he/she isn't even sure if they'll like the sport.
With cross this is different, as pretty much everyone has a
mountain bike they had as a kid which doesn't work that well on
the roads, but can hold up for a cross race (and once you do a
few, I think people will want to start buying cross bikes).
What's cool about
cross is you can race in the morning, and later on watch the pros
race the same course you just did a few hours ago- there's nothing
like reading a VeloNews article about a course you yourself
competed on
All in all, everyone
agreed the course was a lot of fun and are looking forward to more
races upcoming in the fall.
