Road Racing
Road Racing occurs in the
Spring from March until May.
Strategy, endurance, and strong teamwork are the fundamentals of
road racing. Success in road races depends on knowing when to
push as hard as possible and when to stick with the pack (peloton).
The margin of victory is sometimes as thin as a tire-width.
Other times, the winner can break away from the pack with 40 miles
to go and maintain his/her lead. It's exciting, tons of fun,
and totally worthwhile.
There are four
levels for Men and two levels for Women that compete in three types
of road bike races: road races, criteriums, and time trials. Road
races are typically between 40 to 100 miles long depending on the
category, and tend to have a few challenging ascents.
Criteriums typically cover 20 to 30 miles. They last for a
specified amount of time that varies based on level and and take
place on courses that are less than a mile long. Whoever can
cover the most distance, typically 20 to 30 miles, in the allotted
time is the winner. Time trials are team or individual against the
clock. Usually, they cover a distances of less than 20 miles.
Throughout the year, our
racers earn points to represent our conference at the national
competition in mid-May.
