Alcohol First Aid Tips
Use these Guidelines when you think a friend may have had too much to
drink:
DO...
- Be calm, and firmly assist the person to a comfortable,
safe place.
- Immediately get help (eg: calling 511 on campus or
573-3333 off campus) if the person's breathing is irregular or if they
cannot be aroused by shaking or shouting.
- While awaiting help, lie the person on their side with
knees up, to prevent choking if they vomit.
- Check breathing every 15 minutes. Do not leave them
alone.
DO NOT...
- Give them any medication, drugs, or food/drink -- these
only increase the risk of choking and vomiting.
- Try to counsel them about their behavior. Instead,
wait until they are sober to confront them.
- Provoke a fight by arguing with or laughing at someone
who is drunk.
- Permit the person to drive.
- Induce vomiting.
- Try to walk them around.
- Give cold showers. The shock may make them pass out.
