Responsible Usage: Some Practical Tips

- Think BEFORE you drink. Sounds easy, but your judgment can be impaired even with the first drink. This applies to use of any drug.

- KNOW the law! PA laws on alcohol and other drug use carry stiff penalties. Penn policies support PA laws, but include efforts to encourage offenders to get the medical and/or other help they need. Find out what these laws and policies say.

- KNOW your limit: alcohol, pot, speed, ecstasy, etc. are mind-altering drugs. Fun for some, but all have the potential for quickly and unexpectedly turning a good time into something embarrassing or even dangerous. For many, choosing not to drink or use at all is the best option - and they still have fun at Penn!

- Be a REAL friend. Real friends have fun without having to risk life and limb. Real friends let you know when your choices about alcohol and other drug use aren't smart. Real friends let you know when enough is enough.

- Know that 'one drink' is defined as one 12 oz beer, or one 5oz glass of wine, or one 1.5 oz shot of liquor.

- Know that the only way to sober-up is through TIME AWAY from alcohol. Coffee and cold showers do not erase the unpleasant effects of excessive drinking.

- Know WHERE to get information or help. The Office of Health Education, DART's home on the 3rd Floor at 3609-11 Locust Walk, has a variety of brochures and staff to answer your questions. The office can also connect you with a DART peer educator. CAPS(Counseling and Psychological Services, 898-7021) offers individual or group counseling for alcohol and other drug problems.
