The Glorious Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has a rich history with excellence. As our chapter was chartered in March 1918 at the University of (Pennsylvania, it was the third chapter of the Sorority to be established as well as the first Black Greek organization on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus. Our Charter members were influential leaders for African American achievement at the University of Pennsylvania. Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander was the first African American woman in the United States to obtain a Ph.D. in Economics. Not only was Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander the first woman to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, but she was also the first black woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. Both Soror Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander and Soror Anna Johnson Julian, the first African-American women to receive a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, went on to become Delta Sigma Theta’s First and Fourth National Presidents, respectively.
As the women of the Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated strive to uphold the legacy of our illustrious founders, we also strive to provide assistance to the greater Philadelphia community and communities around the world. This year our focus is to follow in this legacy of excellence and because of this effort, the chapter received an unprecedented amount of awards and recognition. At the 49th National Convention, Gamma Chapter received the Regional Awards for Academic Excellence and Strengthening our Sisterhood. At the 2010 Greek Award Ceremony the Gamma Chapter also won the “Outstanding Program for Community Service Award”, the “Outstanding Community Participation Award”, the “Outstanding Program for Alumni Relations Award”, as well as the “Sadie T.M Alexander and Raymond Alexander Award of Excellence”. Most recently at the 48th Eastern Regional Conference we were recognized as “Collegiate Chapter of the Year”, and won the “Financial Fortitude Award”, as well as the “Academic Excellence Award”. In addition, we will continue the chapter’s traditional programs and refocusing on National initiatives.
