The Beauty Queen of Leenane
By Martin McDonagh
Directed by Will Steinberger

The action of The Beauty of Queen Leenane takes place in the kitchen of a run-down cottage in the Irish village Leenane where Maureen, a 40 year old spinster, lives with and cares for her older mother, Mag.  While Maureen's other sisters have managed to escape into the real world, Maureen has been left trapped in a dysfunctional relationship with her mother, in which they each manipulate and harm the other to win any small personal battle in their ongoing war.  For Maureen, hope comes with the visits of Pato Dooley and his younger brother Ray, who similarly feel trapped by the tediousness and limitations of their everyday lives.  This blend of black comedy, melodrama, and tragedy gives us a peak into the lives of those on the fringes of society and comments overall on the corruptibility and emptiness of the modern world.
