A Word From Coach Josh Remick

Dear fans of Pennsylvania Hockey,

Well, I hope you are all as excited as I am about the 2000-2001 season, because it is going to be a great one.  Last season was a breakthrough year for Pennsylvania Hockey, as we won over twenty regular season games, our first ever Division Championship and received a national ranking for the first time in team history.

As coach, I foresee bigger and better things for this upcoming season, my first full year behind the bench.  We’ve got a great group of young, returning players and a strong pool of new, hungry players.  Our schedule this year is even tougher than last year, as we will be playing only top ranked teams and even some Division I opponents (including our first game of the season opponent, Villanova, on Friday September 29th, 2000!!!).  Joining me behind the bench is Dean Winter, who brings with him excellent coaching and hockey knowledge, a determined attitude and a strong desire to win.

For the fans, I promise to you a tireless effort from our team and constant excitement every moment of every game.  Come to the games and you’ll see highly competitive, insanely intense and immensely fun hockey—I guarantee it.  Every Friday afternoon at 5:15 p.m., we play home games at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink—a great hockey venue!  For more information about directions to the rink, our complete schedule, player stats and much, much more, visit our website at http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~hockey.

Well, I’m going to end the talking and let the team’s actions speak for itself.  I sincerely hope to see you all soon, and invite you all to ride on the train of the University of Pennsylvania’s most successful team!

2000-2001 Season Outlook

For those of you new to Pennsylvania Hockey, or for those of you who want to know who to look for this upcoming season, here’s a preseason look at the 2000-2001 Men’s Hockey Team.

We’re solid and deep this year and it’s gonna be tough to beat this team.  Last year’s team’s top quality was scoring goals, and this year promises to be no different.  Leading the way up front is the 1999-2000 DVCHC League MVP, Whit Matthews who led the team last year in goals, assists and points.  However, Whit isn’t the only guy who knows how to put the puck in the net.  Joining him are a slew of talented other players.  Todd Leri and Matt Scattarella could be two of the finest skaters in the league and are looking to surpass their fantastic rookie seasons in all offensive categories.  While most other teams that we play have one solid forward line, Penn exceeds them all by having the deepest roster in the league.  Mike Sand was in the ACHA league leaders for points last year and they don’t call him “Moose” for nothing—you don’t want to get in his way.  He may be little and he may be the coach’s brother, but other teams better watch out for Daniel Remick’s lethal passes and soft hands.  Don’t forget about senior Chris Belanger who’s leadership and experience will no doubt help the team (as will his scoring touch!!!).  But that’s not all.  Ross Giambilvo’s size, Frank Bastone’s grit and Andy Domont’s head are all sure to drive opposing teams nuts and send them home wondering how on earth this Penn team can be so good.  And don’t forget about last season’s second half player of the year, Jeff Bagnoli, who will be fully rejoining the team after the Sprint Football season ends in 5 weeks.  All this and there’s the added threats of newcomers Aaron Wasserman and Michael Friedland, as well as Pennsylvania Rollerhockey Team Superstar Dan Gabbay.

All that offense and it would be easy to forget about the Defense, that is if they weren’t as nasty and tough as our blue-liners.  Leading the way is the team captain Colby Zaph.  He may be older than your father, but he sure is a fantastic player.  Also returning to the team is DVCHC all-star Ryan Redpath who’s Bobby Orr-like scoring touch is just another of Penn’s many weapons.  Owen Callahan is back as well and is sure to be an all-star selection with his wicked offensive skills and his superb defensive play.  Brian “Utah” Regan returns to the blue line as well and his tough-as-nails style makes visiting teams shake with fright.  The blue-line got the most depth from this year’s try-outs, as 5 more players were selected to the roster.  It’d be hard to miss these guys because the one word to describe them all is BIG BIG BIG!!!  Brian Wells, Barrett Nixon, Craig White, Mark Lundquist and Doug Watson are sure to solidify an already vicious defensive corps.

And last, but certainly not least is the final line of defense—the goaltenders.  Back from a broken hand that sidelined him for much of last season is Ned Adams, ready to make a major difference to this team.  With him is DVCHC all-star and rookie of the year Pat Baude, whose slinky spine and Hasek-like saves thrilled fans and teammates for all of last season.  Jay Mather adds even more stability to an already fantastic team and Chris Gagliardi and Steve Hart are sure to have an impact as well.

With all this talent, it’s gonna be an exciting year of Pennsylvania Hockey!!!!
