Last night the Quakers traveled north to Montclair University
to take on the Red Hawks for the second time is as many weekends.
In their first run-in with the Red Hawks, the Quakers earned a hard-fought
5-3 victory. In doing so they set the stage for a regular season
championship game at Floyd Hall. PENN came out fast and set to tone
early. Freshman Micah Cohen struck first, scoring seven minutes into
the first period. Six minutes later, senior Whit Matthews tipped
a Michael Southworth shot from the point past the Montclair goalie.
One minute later, while killing a penalty, Cohen struck again scoring his
fourth short-handed goal of the year on a breakaway. PENN went in
to the locker-room with a 3-0 lead after one. Eight minutes into
the second period, junior Todd Leri continued the scoring and gave PENN
a 4-0 lead. The game would continue in much the same fashion for
the next period and half as PENN continued to dominate the Red Hawks all
over the ice. When all was said and done, the Quakers had come away
with an 8-0 win on the shoulders of junior goalie Pat Baude's second consecutive
shutout (25 saves) and strong defense from veterans Colby Zaph and Owen
Callahan. With the win PENN clinched its first ever MACHA regular
season championship. Multi-point games were turned in by Cohen (2g),
Craig White (3a), Jeff Bagnoli (3a), Matthews (3g,2a), and Leri (3g,1a).
PENN is now looking forward to its last league game of the season against
Seton Hall on Feb 16 and to the MACHA playoffs Feb 22-24.
