PENN Ice Hockey Claims League Title

by Amy Potter
The Daily Pennsylvanian
Feb 27, 2002

The Penn men's club ice hockey team has made its climb to the top of its region.  Last weekend, the Red and Blue catapulted into first-place in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association with wins over Princeton and Rider.  The Quakers headed into the playoff games with the regular-season league title in hand, after blowing out Seton Hall, 12-3, just one weekend before.

Although the squad started off the season with a series of losses, Penn bounced back in the latter part of the schedule.  The team finished off league play on a seven-game winning streak that warranted the league title.  Heading into the MACHA playoffs, the Quakers were ranked No. 1, which allowed them a bye through the first round of play.

Against their Ivy League archrivals, the Quakers pulled through, demonstrating the extreme poise and cohesive offensive effort that lead the team to its league title. Penn ultimately defeated the Tigers, 4-2.  In the championship game of the MACHA playoffs -- also the Quakers' final game of the 2001-02 season -- Penn obliterated MACHA rival Rider, 9-5.  Earlier this season, the Broncs defeated the Quakers, 5-1.  Penn finished the season 20-12-1 overall, and are 12th in ACHA Northeast rankings.
____________

Penn out-shot their opponents 83 to 59 throughout the playoffs.  In net, Pat Baude made 52 saves on the weekend.
