Liberty Bell Invitational Recap

On Saturday September 29 the Penn Men's Ice Hockey Team opened up the 2002-2003 season by hosting the 2nd Annual Liberty Bell invitational.  In their first game the Quakers took on cross-town rival Temple University.

Both teams came out fast but it was the Quakers who struck first.  Seven minutes into the period senior Dan Remick picked up where he left off last year netting his first goal of the season after being set up by linemates Micah Cohen and Mike Sand.  Later in the first, freshman Rob Rennert was hit with a perfect pass from Justin Mascitelli giving him a clean break away.  Rennert was able to beat the Temple goalie top shelf giving Penn a 2-0 lead.  Two minutes later, freshman Patrick Linnemann got a pass from captain Todd Leri and broke up the right side of the ice.  Linnemann had one man to beat and let a snap-shot go form the top of the circle beating the goalie high on the glove side.  It looked like the Quakers would take a 3-0 lead in to the period, but 1 minute later a turnover cost Penn a goal and the score at the end of the period was 3-1.  Period 2 got off to a quick start, Cohen sprung behind the Temple defense and got a pass form freshman Tyler Wallen.  The resulting goal gave Penn a 4-1 lead.  Penn could not notch another one in the second despite keeping the puck in the Temple zone for most of the period.  At the end of 2 periods Penn led 4-2.  In the third period Penn continued to control the play.  Six minutes into the period, Remick would get his second goal of the night after Cohen drew the defense to him and hit Remick with another breakaway pass.  The last goal of the evening came from Leri who, after getting a pass from Wallen and using his speed to beat both Temple defensemen, had a breakaway on the helpless Temple goaltender.  When all was said and done Penn defeated Temple 6-2.  Goalie Pat Baude turned away 23 of 25 shots, and freshman goalie Mark Tyson stopped all 5 shots he saw late in the third period.  A solid defensive performance was turned in by senior Owen Callahan.

On Sunday Penn faced off against a solid ACHA Division 1 opponent in Drexel University.  On the heals of a trip to last season's national tournament, Drexel was sure to be a formidable foe.  Drexel's hard hitting play and sloppy mistakes by the Quaker's in the neutral zone led to 2 quick goals in the first five minutes of play.  After this lapse Penn regained their composure and played solid defense for the rest of the period but were not able to capitalize on any of their scoring opportunities.    Early in the second Drexel would strike again making in 3-0.  It was not until 15 minutes into the period that Penn was able to put one up on the board.  Freshman Steve Skill scored his first goal as a Quaker on a pass from Mascitelli.  The 3-1 lead would not last for long though.  Two minutes later Drexel got another to make it 4-1 at the end of two periods.  In the third, Penn played hard.  Cohen was able to score half way through the period on a pass from Remick.  But again turnovers took their toll and Drexel was was able to score 2 more goals before the final buzzard.  When all was said and done Penn had been out-shot 60-23 and the scoreboard read 6-2 in favor of the Dragons.  Penn will have the opportunity to face Drexel, arguably the toughest team they will play all season, again on October 31.

This weekend Penn has two big games at home.  The Quakers will face Penn State on Friday and Marist on Saturday.  Both teams are strong opponents in the ACHA Northeast region.
