Two Games, Two Entirely Different PENN Teams

This past weekend at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink saw both highs and lows from the PENN Men's Ice Hockey Team.

On Friday evening an uninspired Quaker team took the ice to do battle with Penn State.  Out of the gate, PENN looked slow and without purpose.  Passing was sloppy, speed was missing, and PENN was getting knocked all over the ice by a much larger Penn State squad.  The game remained scoreless for the first 13 minutes of period one until the Quakers were called for too-many men on the ice.  One minute into the penalty Penn State capitalized on the man advantage.  Two minutes later freshman Steve Skillen was called for tripping and the ensuing power-play led to yet another Penn State goal.  Any spark from the Quaker bench was quickly extinguished when Penn State added a third goal prior to the end of the first period.  Down 3-0 going in to the second, PENN could do little to get things going.  Penn State scored 24 seconds into the period and added another one late in the same period.  A 5-0 lead going in to the final period would be more than enough of a cushion to take the victory.  Penn's only bright spot of the night came when sophomore Micah Cohen tipped in a pass from senior Owen Callahan on the Quakers third power-play of the evening.  Penn State would chip in another two goals, including a short-handed tally in the waning minutes of period 3, before the final buzzard sounded.  Hanging their heads, PENN walked away from Friday night with a humiliating 7-1 loss.

Knowing that they had not given it nearly their all of Friday evening, a passionate Quaker team showed up to the rink on Saturday.  As word spread throughout the rink that Marist had beat perennial northeast powerhouse Siena on the previous night the jitters in the PENN locker room began to rise.  Aware that this was an opportunity to avenge Friday's lackluster effort, a fired up Quaker team took the ice.  The first period was all PENN, they came out skating fast, making clean passes, and playing smart hockey.  Senior Dan Remick opened up the scoring halfway through the first period when he was set up in the offensive zone by winger Mike Sand.  The solid PENN play would continue till the final minutes of the period when Marist was able to sneak a deflected power-play goal in to make the score 1-1 at the end of the first period.  The Quakers out-shot the Red Foxes 22-5 in the first period.  In the second period PENN continued to control the play, keeping the puck in the Marist end for the majority of the period, but it was once again a penalty that hurt the Quakers.  Marist was able to notch a second power-play goal midway through the second and take a 2-1 lead.  Minutes later it looked like the score would be 3-1, until freshman goalie Mark Tyson came up with a huge glove save on a Marist breakaway.  The score was 2-1 in favor of Marist at the end of two periods, yet the Quakers knew the score had not been indicative of their play as they were out-shooting Marist 35-14.  The key in the third was to continue playing hard and figure out a way to get the puck past the Marist goalie. Captain Todd Leri lead the way in this effort.  One minute into the third Leri got a pass from senior Matt Scatterella, skated to the slot and ripped one into the net.  Seconds later, Skillen notched another for the Quakers giving PENN a 3-2 lead.  PENN would soon face a real challenge.  After a skirmish in the defensive zone the Quakers were on the bad end of a five minute major penalty for fighting (freshman Tyler Wallen was ejected) and an additional 2 minute minor.  Marist quickly took advantage of the 5 on 3 and tied the score at 3-3.  With 4 minutes still remaining on the major PENN played solid and was able to kill off the rest of the penalty.  PENN struck back fast in no time.  Later in the period Remick got the puck at the redline, beat two Marist defenders wide to the right then set up Cohen who was camped out in the slot.  Cohen's goal gave the Quakers a 4-3 lead.  Eight seconds later freshman Rob Rennert added another to give PENN a two goal lead.  Marist scored another to make the score 5-4, but the Quakers played solid hockey in the last five minutes and preserved the win.  Tyson turned away 19 of 23 shots and earned his first collegiate victory.

The skating Quakers will open up MACHA league play when they take on Ivy League rival Princeton Wednesday night at 8:30pm at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink.
