Three Weeks, Only Two Games, Quakers Return To Busy Schedule

What a long 3 weeks it has been.  Until this past Saturday, it had been nearly 17 days since the Quakers last played a game.  The University's Fall Break, followed by the cancellation of two league games resulted in PENN's long hiatus from play.

On October 9, the Quakers entered the Class of 1923 Rink to open up MACHA league play against Ivy League rival Princeton University.  PENN was out to not only tame the hated Tigers, but also to begin their defense of last season's MACHA Championship.  The game was a hard fought battle with both teams playing well for the first two periods.  At the end of 40 minutes of play the teams were tied at 3-3.  Clearly unhappy with the with the score, the Quaker coaching staff decided to mix up the lines for the third period.  The shake up appeared to be just what the doctor ordered.  PENN came out of the gates fast, scoring two goals in the first 2 minutes of the period, essentially putting the game out of reach for the over-matched Tigers.  The Quakers would add a third goal midway through the final period and hold on to their three goal lead until the final buzzard.  The 6-3 win was due in large part to senior goalie Pat Baude's excellent play.  Baude turned away 23 of 26 shots and earned himself his second win of the season.

Fast forward 3 weeks to South Orange, NJ.  The Quakers made the trip north to take on Seton Hall University.  Having beaten the Pirates twice the previous season, Penn expected nothing less then a convincing win to open this year's series.  PENN came out strong and never looked back.  The flood gates were opened when sophomore Micah Cohen put home a rebound off defenseman Mike Bobby's shot from the point.  Five minutes later freshman Steve Skillen set up in left slot and put home a wrist shot in the top right corner.  With three minutes to go in the first period Cohen once again camped out in front of the net and was able to put home another rebound off senior Mike Sand's shot from the top of the circle.  One minute later Skillen notched his second of the night, after being set up by line-mates Justin Mascitelli and Rob Rennert.  With 50 seconds to go in the period, Pat Linneman added one more to give the Quakers a 5-0 lead.  The second period continued in much the same fashion as the first.  Two minutes into the period, freshman Justin Bracken tallied his first goal of the season, sliding a rebound into the Seton Hall net.  Later in the period senior Dan Remick put home a power-play goal on a pass through the slot from Cohen.  The nail-in-the-coffin came late in the second when senior Matt Scattarella scored his first goal of the season to give the Quakers an 8-0 lead.  After two periods the Quakers took out Baude, who turned away all 14 shots that he faced, and put in freshman goalie Mark Tyson.  Cohen scored his third goal of the night five minutes into the period, this time he was set up with a break-away pass from freshman Tyler Wallen.  Seton Hall did manage to score three goals in the third period, but late goals by senior Andy Domont and freshman David Gordon-Kamm capped off PENN's 11-3 trouncing of Seton Hall.  Of note, freshman defenseman Garrett Young had a breakthrough evening assisting on four of the Quakers' 11 goals.

PENN hosts a busy Homecoming weekend at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink.  On Thursday night PENN takes on division 1 Drexel University.  The Quakers have not beaten Drexel in over two years. On Friday the Quaker's face-off against Monmouth University.  The weekend will finish up Saturday when PENN takes on University of Maryland Baltimore County.
