Homecoming Fans Treated to a Bit of Everything
|
The Quakers opened up this
past homecoming weekend against Philadelphia rival Drexel University.
Drexel, an ACHA division 1 team, was certainly the favorite headed
into Thursday's match-up. The Dragons had beaten the Quakers in
their last seven games, dating back to 1999, and were fresh off a
road-game upset of #3 Ohio (ACHA D1). Nonetheless, a determined
PENN squad took the ice ready to quiet the rowdy Drexel fans. An
energized PENN squad shocked Drexel in the first ten minutes of play.
The Quakers controlled play in the Drexel zone and struck first. Leading
scorer Micah Cohen notched the game's first goal. Cohen camped out
on the left side of net and was able to pounce on freshman Mike Bobby's
shot from the point. The tally gave PENN an early 1-0 lead, but it
would not last for long. Just 24 seconds later Drexel evened the
score, sliding a backhand shot under goalie Pat Baude. One minute
later Drexel struck again and took a 2-1 lead. The goal seemed to
suck the life out of the Quaker bench. For the remainder of the period,
PENN sat on their heals and let Drexel control the play. At the
end of the first period they trailed 3-1 and had been out-shot 14-7.
The second period brought much of the same. An unenthused
PENN team simply sat back and went through the motions. The
Quakers were out-shot 13-6 in the period and gave up 4 goals, including
a shorthanded goal midway through the period. Trailing 7-1 at the
end of two periods it looked like things were about to get out of hand,
but a determined PENN team was not about to let that happen. Instead
of playing like they had a already lost the game, the Quakers took the
ice prepared to show Drexel that they were not going to roll over and
die easily. Two minutes into the period Cohen added his second of
the game firing a cross-ice pass from assistant captain Dan Remick past
the unsuspecting Drexel goalie. PENN continued to control the play
in the third period keeping the puck in the Drexel zone. Six
minutes later freshman Pat Linneman was able to sneak another one in
after picking the puck up in the slot. The Quakers last goal of
the evening game from senior Andy Domonot who beat the goalie high on
the blocker side with eight minutes to play in the period. The
remainder of the period was hard fought at both ends of ice. A
strong defensive effort in the third period held Drexel scoreless and
limited them to only 5 shots on goal. The strong third period
showing lead many to wonder what could have been, but in the end PENN
settled with a 7-4 loss. Senior goalie Pat Baude ended the night
with 25 saves on 32 shots.
On Friday, the 0-5-0 Monmouth Icehawks proved to be no match for the powerful Quakers offensive attack. Assistant captain Mike Sand opened up the scoring 2 minutes into period one. Halfway through the period freshman Pat Linneman gave PENN a 2-0 lead firing a shot above the Monmouth goalie from just inside the blue line. Freshman Steve Skillen added a power-play goal at 14:03 and sophomore Jeff Goldberg capped of the 4-0 period with another with only 29 seconds left in the period. At the end of one PENN had out-shot the Icehawks 23-5 and assistant captain Owen Callahn had already notched 3 assists. In the second period the Quaker power-play came to life. Eight minutes into the period freshman Justin Mascitelli scored his first goal of the season on a power-play breakaway pass from Callahan. One minute later the power-play struck again as senior Nolan Keally notched his first goal of the season. Late in the period, with five seconds remaining, a defensive breakdown lead to Monmouth's first goal of the night. At the end of two periods, PENN led 6-1 and was out shooting Monmouth 40-15. In the third period PENN simply dominated play all over the ice. Sand and Callahan both notched goals early in the period. Linneman scored his second of the night eight minutes into the period. With ten minutes to go in the game Sand added his third goal of the night for his first hat-trick of the season. Later in the period Skillen and Keally each scored their second goals of the night. Freshamn Trevor Lott scored his first goal of the season at the 16:50 mark. In the end PENN walked away with a very convincing 13-2 win, out-shooting the Icehawks 57-21. Freshman goalie Mark Tyson made 19 saves on 21 shots. Last up for the Quakers on their busy weekend slate were the UMBC Retrievers. The first 15 minutes of period one were hard fought at both ends of the ice. Both PENN and UMBC had good scoring chances, but Baude and his opposing net-minder held the game scoreless. The Quakers struck first with five minutes left in the period. Captain Todd Leri led a breakout with line-mates Rob Rennert and David Gordon-Kamm. Leri hit Rennert with a perfect breakout pass. Rennert took the puck deep into the UMBC zone, dropped it to Gordon-Kamm who fed Leri in the slot. Leri fired a one-timer that gave PENN a 1-0 lead. UMBC struck back minutes later to tie the game 1-1. With one minute to go in the period Skillen got the puck to sophomore Mike Southworth whose slap-shot from the point beat the UMBC goalie high on the glove side. The PENN lead did not last long though, 30 seconds later UMBC tied the score at 2-2. PENN started the second period with a bang. Less than one minute into the period Leri scored his second goal of the evening after being set up once again by line-mates Gordon-Kamm and Rennert. Once again UMBC responded quickly. Nineteen seconds after Leri's goal UMBC beat Baude to tie the score at 3-3. Three minutes later the Quakers found themselves trailing for the first time in the game after UMBC capitalized on a power-play. Sensing opportunity, the UMBC offense picked things up and tallied their fifth goal of the evening to take a 5-3 lead. The Quakers were able to stop the bleeding at five. An early power-play for the Quakers got the third period started off on the right foot. Sand put home the power-play goal two minutes into the period. With the score 5-4, PENN tried desperately to even the goals. The Quakers had numerous opportunities throughout the period to put home the fifth goal, but they were not able to beat the solid goaltending of UMBC. At the other end of the ice, Baude was making save after save to keep the Quakers within one. With less than two minutes on the clock, PENN was able to tie the score 5-5. Rennert threw a pass into the slot that hit a UMBC defenseman and found its way to the back of the net. It may not have been pretty, but it was just what the Quakers needed to avert their first ever loss to UMBC. The final two minutes saw quality scoring opportunities from both teams but once again the goalies came up big. Despite out-shooting the Retrievers 43-36 the Quakers were forced to settle with a 5-5 tie. Baude made 31 saves on the night. This weekend the #7 (ACHA D2 Northeast) PENN Quakers take on MACHA opponents Seton Hall University and William Paterson University. |
