Quakers Remain Undefeated In Defense of MACHA Championship

A mid-semester lull swept over the skating Quakers this weekend.  With interview season in full swing for the seniors, and homecoming weekend beckoning the freshmen back to the schools they left just a few months ago, a depleted squad took to the ice in this weekend's games.

On Friday night PENN faced off against MACHA cellar-dweller Seton Hall University.  The Quakers had run all over the Pirates just two weeks earlier, beating them by a score of 11-3.  Whether it is was overconfidence in the PENN locker-room or determination on the part of Seton Hall, this game was not going to be the rout fans in the Class of 1923 Rink were expecting.  PENN came out hard with early scoring opportunities from defenseman Owen Callahan but were unable to capitalize.  Seton Hall got on the board first converting an opportunity in front of the Quaker net 4:37 into the first period.  Callahan struck back six minutes later.  On the power-play, freshman Pat Linneman worked the puck out of the corner and fed Callahan at the point.  The goal tied the game at 1-1.  Going into the second period the game remained tied, but the Quakers wasted no time in gaining the lead.  Three minutes into the period senior Mike Sand gave PENN a 2-1 lead.  Later in the period a penalty would prove costly.  Down a man, PENN gave up a power-play goal at the 7:24 mark of the second, tying the score at 2-2.  For the remainder of the period the Seton Hall goalie turned away numerous scoring chances while at the same time the Quakers killed off 12 minutes in penalties.  Fired up, PENN got on the board quick in the third.  Just 41 seconds into period three freshman David Gordon-Kamm notched what would be the game-winning goal after putting home a cross ice pass from captain Todd Leri.  That would be all the excitement in the third period as the Quakers skated away with 3-2 win.  Freshman goalie Mark Tyson turned away 12 shots in the victory.

Saturday night looked to be promising for the boys from Philly.  Returning from injury for the game were seniors Dan Remick and Matt Scattarella.  For a long while though it seemed Remick and Scatt may not have the opportunity to get back into the action as the PENN bus circled north Jersey heading everywhere but in the right direction (side note- buses are NOT allowed on the Palisades Parkway, you'd think a bus driver would know that!).  Finally, at 8:10pm the PENN bus pulled into the Sport-o-Rama (nice name) ice rink for the evening's 8:00pm game.  As the players rushed to get dressed and the coaches filled water bottles William Paterson continued their warm-up.  Faced with the possibility of a forfeit PENN started the game as soon as goalie Pat Baude and five skaters were dressed, no warm-up.  The bus legs showed as the Quakers gave up two early goals.  Just four minutes into the period the Quakers found themselves down 2-0.  Finally, everyone was dressed, the bench was full, and PENN settled down.  With a shift in everyone, the legs had loosened up and the adrenalin was pumping.  PENN got on the board first when Sand put home his second goal of the weekend, picking up a rebound from defenseman Mike Southworth.  At the end of one period, Penn trailed 2-1 but were out-shooting William Paterson 12-11.  The second period got off to a quick start with Leri tying the game 2-2.  Leri picked up the puck at the redline and had a 1 on 1 with the Paterson defenseman.  Crossing the blueline Leri wound up for a slapshot freezing the defenseman in his tracks.  Instead of shooting Leri carried the puck wide around the flat-footed defenseman and beat the goalie low on the stick side, executing the "Leri" perfectly.  PENN had numerous chances to take the led in the second, out-shooting William Paterson 14-7 in the period, but they were unable to capitalize.  Tied 2-2 going into the third, PENN would once again strike early.  Freshman Justin Bracken got a breakaway pass at the far blueline and had no-one to beat but the goalie.  Bracken was caught in the slot and got a weak dump on the net.  Bracken was then rode into the corner and received a vicious check-from-behind.  Bracken was not fazed, he hopped to his feet, skated to the front of the net and put home a pass from senior Andy Domont to give the Quakers a 3-2 lead.  Late in the period Paterson had three scoring opportunities, two breakaways and an open man in the slot, but each and every time Baude turned them away.  His 16 saves in the third period preserved the 3-2 win for PENN.

This Friday PENN once again faces-off against William Paterson in a rematch of last weekend's game.  On Saturday, the Quakers will travel to Lehigh, PA to take on Lafayette University.
