Quakers Falter: First Winless Weekend Of The Season

On Friday evening PENN faced off against the William Paterson Pioneers for the second time in less than a week.  Six days earlier the Quakers traveled north and earned a 3-2 win over WPU.  PENN came out of the gates fast in this match-up.  Three minutes into the first period leading scorer Micah Cohen notched his first short-handed goal of the season after receiving a cross ice pass  from assistant captain Dan Remick.  Six minutes later assistant captain Owen Callahan picked up a loose puck in the neutral-zone and and beat three William Patterson players before going top-shelf on the helpless Pioneer goalie.  With a 2-0 lead and a 12-6 advantage in shots PENN ended the first period in control.  The second period commenced with end to end action from both teams.  Freshman goalie Mark Tyson came up big in the early minutes of period two preserving the 2-0 lead.  Senior Matt Scattarella gave the Quakers a 3-0 lead at the 7:09 mark scoring a power-play goal off of line-mate Steve Skillen's shot from the high slot.  William Paterson would inch closer two minutes later scoring their first goal of the night.  PENN extended their lead to 4-1 two minutes later after Scattarella forced a WPU turnover in the neutral-zone.  Sensing opportunity Callahan jumped up in the play and joined the two person rush toward the Pioneer goalie.  Scattarella fed the puck to Callahan who beat the goalie low on the stick side.  The three goal cushion would not last for long as PENN found itself shorthanded.  At 13:10 of the second period WPU scored its first power-play goal of the night, one minute later a second goal pulled them with one.  With less than a minute remaining in the period Cohen would add his second goal of the night to give the Quakers a 5-3 lead after two periods of play.  Fifty-six seconds into the third period freshman David Gordon-Kamm picked up a loose puck in the Pioneer's defensive zone, walked to the slot, beat two defenders and fired the puck past the WPU goalie.  With 11 minutes to go in the game PENN took what seemed to be a commanding 7-3 lead on a Skillen power-play goal.  Less than one-minute after the goal a frustrated Pioneer team took what should have been a devastating string of penalties.  Four separate penalties resulted in nearly 8 minutes of Quaker power-play, three minutes with a two man advantage.  Yet, in an ironic twist this proved to be an opportunity for the Pioneers.  In a span of two minutes and five seconds an over-confident PENN team failed to play effective defensive hockey and gave up a unheard of three straight short-handed goals.  The rally pulled WPU to with-in one goal.  Building off of this momentum the Pioneers continued to crash the net looking to even the score, and sure enough with three minutes to go in the game the seventh WPU goal of the night tied the score at 7-7.  As the final minutes ticked off the clock a shocked PENN squad was left to wonder how they had squandered  a 7-3 lead with ten minutes left in the game.  For the Quakers, Tyson made 19 saves on 25 shots and back-up goalie Jason Kalish stopped 2 of the 3 shots he faced.

On Saturday PENN headed to the Lehigh Valley to take on the Lafayette University Pards.  In the last match-up of these teams, in February of 2002, PENN shut-out the Pards 5-0.  The games featured two teams of fast skaters and solid puck handlers.  Lafayette struck first scoring early in the game.  Five minutes into period one a weak clearing attempt in the defensive zone resulted in the Pards' early 1-0 lead.  Wide open at the point, the Lafayette defender fired a shot on senior goalie Pat Baude.  Baude made the save but the rebound was put home as the Lafayette offense crashed the net.  The remainder of period one saw scoring chances at both ends of the ice but both Baude and Lafayette goalie Steven Keen turned them all away.  After the first period PENN trailed 1-0 despite out-shooting the Pards 11-8.  Period two continued in the same hard fought fashion as the first.  Keen continued to come up big for the Pards keeping the Quakers out of the net, while at the other end Baude turned away a flurry of scoring opportunities as the Quakers were out-shot 15-11.  Still trailing by one going into the third PENN came out looking to score.  Early in the period the Quakers looked poised to even it up.  A 1-1 tie seemed guaranteed as Remick flew down the ice six minutes into the third period with no one to beat but the goalie, however Keen turned him away.  Late in the third, with five minutes remaining PENN found itself on the bad end of a four-minute roughing call to Skillen.  Down a man the Quakers were forced to back off of the offensive attack.  Lafayette added the insurance goal on the power-play and was able to hold on to the 2-0 lead.  The shut-out marked the first time the PENN offense had been completely shut-down in nearly two years.  Baude stopped 30 of 32 shots in the game.  The Quakers out-shot the Pards 36-32.

This weekend the Quakers face their toughest challenge of year as they look to remain atop the MACHA standings.  On Friday PENN takes on rival Rider University.  Rider and PENN are the only remaining undefeated teams in the MACHA this season.  Rider and PENN met last in the 2002 MACHA Championship Game where the Quakers defeated the Broncs 9-5.  On Saturday the Quakers head south to Maryland to do battle with UMBC.  The Retrievers are currently tied for second place in the MACHA with Rider.  When these two teams last met on November 2 they skated to 5-5 tie.
