The Quakers ended 2002 on a bit of a sour note, losing three of their last four and getting out-scored 18-10. The final game of 2002 saw the Montclair Red Hawks visit the Quakers at the Class of 1923 Rink. Montclair was surely seeking revenge for last season's humiliating 8-0 loss at Floyd Hall Arena. It did not take long for the Red Hawks to get on board. Less than two minutes into period one Penn found itself down 1-0. Captain Todd Leri evened the score minutes later with a power play goal. Late in the period Montclair broke the dead-lock on a power play goal to take a 2-1 lead into the locker-room. Period two saw hard hitting action at both ends of the ice but it was the goalies who came out on top. Penn net-minder Mark Tyson turned away all 6 shots he faced, as did the MSU goalie with the seven shots that he faced. Things looked good for the Quakers early in the third period when Mike Sand tied the game at 2-2. Unable to take the lead on numerous scoring chances the Quaker momentum was about to shift. With twelve minutes to go in the game the Red Hawks went on a scoring barrage. When all was said and done MSU had scored five unanswered goals on eight shots in the third period. With a 7-2 loss, the defending MACHA Champions had little to celebrate going into the break. Despite a lackluster end to 2002 the Quakers should not be hanging their heads as they kickoff the second half of the season. Last year at this point Penn had amassed a dismal 9-10-1 record for a .475 winning percentage. This season the Quakers are 8-6-2 with a similar .563 winning percentage. If history is any indication of what to expect, teams stepping on the ice to do battle with the Quakers this semester better watch out. Last season Penn went 11-2-0 after the break, including a nine game winning streak that lead up to the 2002 MACHA Regular Season and Playoff Championships. The Quakers are sure to fight hard to defend their titles. Friday Penn will take on Wagner College at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink. Last time these two teams met the Quakers blew a 5-2 third period lead and ended up losing 6-5. This time the team looks to avenge that loss as they unveil the 2002 MACHA Championship banner. On Saturday, the Quakers head north to face-off against Montclair. The team invites all New York and New Jersey alumni to come to the game as we will not be making our annual trip into the city this year. |
