Dismal January Behind Them, Quakers Score 21 Unanswered Goals
The Penn Men's hockey decisively
snapped its 2003 losing streak this past weekend, collectively outscoring its
opponents 21-2 in two days. Having gone 0-4-0 in January, while losing
their last three games by only one goal, the Penn team could feel a turnaround
coming and finally put it all together in two fantastic games.
In what would be the Class of 2003's final game at the fabled Class of 1923 Ice Rink, the Penn players came with a chip on their shoulder. With the arena filled with over 400 frenzied and loud spectators, the Penn team was poised to put on a show against the defending ACHA Division III National Champions Robert Morris University.
Penn came out hitting hard from the get-go and looked to have the upper hand
from the opening face-off. RMU, who had traveled six hours earlier that
day, was not about to go down without a fight (literally). Despite a
majority of the game being played in the RMU end of the ice, the score remained
knotted at zero until Senior Owen Callahan opened the floodgates with a power-play
goal at 9:07. Five minutes later, Freshman Steve Skillen and Senior
Dan Remick had scored power-play and short-handed goals, respectively, making
the score going into the first intermission 3-0 in favor of Penn.
The second period saw much of the same, but the referees who had seemingly put
their whistles away in the first period had them out constantly in the second.
Senior Jeff Bagnoli scored twice in 11 seconds on an RMU major penalty, and
things went downhill for RMU from there. Frustrated and tired, play became
chippy and slow, while the frenzy in the stands continued. By the end of
the second period, more than 50 minutes of penalties had been assessed and Penn
had added one more power-play goal by Senior Mike Sand and the score stood at
6-0.
The third period saw more scoring from the seniors. Captian Todd Leri notched three more assists for a game total of five, and Remick added his second. Senior Matt Scatterella notched one as well. At the 5:48 mark, RMU finally put a point on the board, but Penn still wasn't finished. Skillen added another goal on a shot through his legs from just behind the goal line worthy of the highlight reels, while sophomores Mike Southworth and Micah Cohen each added one as well. Freshman Garrett Young put the final nail in the coffin with a slapshot from the point at the 10 minute mark of the third making the final score Penn 12, RMU 1. In senior goaltender Pat Baude's final home game he turned away 24 shots and let in only one goal, a season best.
It wasn't a league game, but with just two games remaining in the regular
season, the Penn team hoped to carry the momentum into the next night against
Monmouth University in Wall, NJ.
The Penn team came prepared to play again on
Saturday night, but the facilities were not exactly conducive to good hockey.
Dressing in a locker room that resembled a dungeon wasn't an auspicious start.
Playing on ice that was torn up after eight minutes, the game wasn't as fast
paced as the Penn team would have liked, and it allowed a struggling Monmouth
team to hang in the game longer than they would have liked.
Contrary to their custom in January, the Quakers opened the scoring in this one.
Leri got things going with a power-play goal at 1:14, but Monmouth came roaring
back scoring just a minute and a half later on their first shot. Freshman
goalie Mark Tyson was solid thereafter turning away the next 17 shots he
faced. The game remained tied until defenseman Nolan Kealy put one in from
the point and the Quakers never looked back. Callahan added another one a
few minutes later to make the score going into the break 3-1, with the Quakers
holding a commanding lead in shots, 20-6.
Penn scored four more times in the second, Remick scored twice, while freshmen
David Gordon-Kamm and Pat Linneman each added one. Penn continued to spend too
much time in the box, but successfully killed every penalty assessed this
weekend. Linneman added his second goal of the game in the third period
and Sand added a shorthanded goal to make the final score 9-1 in favor of Penn.
The Quaker's special teams came up huge this weekend. Despite being assessed
over 90 minutes in penalties the Penn defense refused to give up a single
short-handed goal. At the other end of the ice the Quakers had 8
power-play goals and added 3 short-handed tallies.
With one game remaining in the regular season this Saturday at Princeton, Penn needs a win to clinch at least third place in the MACHA and avoid playing in next-weekend's Friday night playoff play-in game. With efforts like this past weekend, the Penn team looks poised to defend its 2002 MACHA Championship.
