Quakers winless in second weekend of play
By Garrett Young
The Penn Men’s Ice Hockey team took to the ice for their second weekend of action with a league-opener at home in the Class of 1923 Arena against the University of Maryland Baltimore County, and a non-league, but equally important game against the Fighting Violets of New York University in New York City.
Friday night against UMBC the Quakers came out firing on all cylinders. Sophomore Pat Linneman opened up the scoring just 55 seconds into the game off of passes from sophomore line-mates Andy Kantrovitz and Rob Rennert. Less than two minutes later, sophomore transfer Cale Spaulding lit the lamp once again, making it 2-0 Quakers with 17:35 remaining in the first. It would remain that way until the last two minutes, when Rennert notched his first goal and second point of the day, and the Quakers headed into the locker room up 3-0.
The Second period was a different story. The UMBC team came out skating hard and the Quakers seemed content to sit on their heels and protect their lead. The sudden aggressive play from the other side of the ice seemed to stun the Penn team, and the Retrievers were back in the game, after notching 3 goals in the first ten minutes of the period, two on the power-play. Sophomore Steve Skillen did add one power-play goal for the Quakers at the end of the second, and they headed into the locker room stunned, but still with a lead.
The Third period was defensive all over the ice, but UMBC drew the only blood of the period, tying the game at 4 with another power-play goal. The game went into overtime, both teams playing 4-4 for five minutes and swarming their opponents’ net. The goaltenders held their ground, and the game ended in a tie, much to the disappointment of the Quakers, who had looked to be cruising to an easy victory early in the game.
Sunday was another story for the Penn team. Arriving in Manhattan without a full squad and only a short time to prepare for the game, the Quakers came out unprepared for the NYU team they were about to face. In a rink that can only just be considered regulation size, the Violets played a fast, physical game that Penn had not yet seen.
However, Penn scored first, for the fourth time in as many games. The goal, scored less than 5 minutes into the game, was scored by Rob Rennert who walked in on the goalie around the defenseman on a feed from sophomore Garrett Young. Despite NYU’s dump and chase style that cornered the Penn squad in their own end for much of the game, the Quakers seemed ready to play through a physical game and looked to be holding their own. The Violets however, came back and tied the game just 36 seconds after the Rennert tally. The game would remain that way for the rest of the first and second period.
Over the course of the game, the physical play on the small ice surface forced a couple of Penn players who had been nursing nagging injuries from the game, and further shortened what had been a short bench to begin with. NYU was able to capitalize on some Penn mistakes, and though sophomore Tyler Wallen notched his first goal of the season, it was not enough, and the Quakers fell to the Violets 4-2 in the end. All in all, however, the Quakers were pleased with their effort against the NYU squad that is perennially a contender for the national championship.
