Penn dominates in wins over Virginia, Seton Hall
Quakers looking toward grudge match with top-ranked Penn State

By Jeff Greenwald

After being handed a tough loss by Penn State on October 2, the Penn men’s hockey team returned to the winning track it was able to find so easily at the start the season.

The Quakers were able to pull things back together as they handily beat Virginia, 7-0, on Friday before a dominant, 13-3, performance at Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association rival Seton Hall on Saturday.

Things looked bad from the very beginning for Virginia on Friday. The Cavaliers were delayed by traffic, forcing the game’s start time to be pushed back by 45 minutes. Not only did the Cavaliers have to deal with attempting to play after a five-hour trip, but they also did not start the game with their entire team.

Once the teams took the ice the Quakers (5-1-0, 2-0-0 MACHA) did not make it any easier for Virginia. The Red and Blue came out strong, a hallmark of the team at this point in the season.  Penn stepped up their physical intensity after being dominated by Penn State in that department during their previous game.

The Quakers created a barrage of scoring chances early in the game and finally capitalized just over 11 minutes into the first period. Senior Michael Southworth corralled the puck at the point and was able to find junior Andy Kantrovitz on the goal line. Kantrovitz sent the puck behind the net to Jeff Greenwald, who walked the puck out around the left side of the net. Greenwald took a shot that hit the near post and just trickled past the Virginia goaltender.

That would be the only goal the Quakers would need as junior Mark Tyson and sophomore transfer Alex May combined for 19 saves and the shutout.

The Red and Blue continued their success against Seton Hall (0-2-0, 0-2-0 MACHA), scoring just 31 seconds into the game. Junior Garrett Young banked a pass off the boards to Justin Mascitelli who found junior Cale Spaulding wide open in the slot. Spaulding fired the puck past the Seton Hall goalie to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

However, the Quakers failed to hold their early lead. Freshman Zack Kaplan was called for hooking deep in Penn’s zone at 17:43. It took the Pirates only 40 seconds to capitalize on the power play, slipping a rebound past Tyson.

But the score did not stay tied for long as Penn sophomore Matt Bessette fired a wrist shot from the point into the top right hand corner to put the Quakers up for good.

Then the penalties came raining down for both teams. Tyson and a Seton Hall forward got into a scuffle and Bessette jumped in to support his goalie. A second Seton Hall player jumped in and was charged with a third-man-in penalty and subsequently received a game misconduct. The referees finally got control of the game at the end of the period, but it was already out of reach for the Pirates with the Quakers leading 4-1.

Spaulding eventually earned a hat trick and added an assist for good measure. Captain Micah Cohen matched Spaulding’s effort with a hat trick of his own and
Kantrovitz added two more goals.

Now Penn must look to this weekend’s match-up with Penn State. The Ice Lions handed the Quakers a 9-2 loss at State College and the Red and Blue will be looking for redemption.

However, this time the Ice Lions must travel to Philadelphia and face the Quakers at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink where they are undefeated this season. The two teams square off Friday at 7:00 pm.
