Quakers
fall to Penn State, roll over Marist Red Foxes Unfortunately the Quakers came up on the short end of the stick again as they fell to the Ice Lions 9-0. The Quakers (6-2-0, 2-0-0 MACHA) started the game strong and were able to play Penn State even for the first half of the first period. But the Ice Lions (5-0-0, 1-0-0 Super East) put up their first goal with 12 minutes remaining in the first frame and never looked back. Penn State scored two more goals before the end of the first period to make it 3-0. The Quakers never made a significant move to get back into the game after the first period as the Ice Lions continued their domination over the Quakers during the last three years, also managing to outshoot Penn, 47 to 22. Mark Tyson, who started the game for the Quakers, allowed 6 goals on 35 shots, while freshman Jesse Rogers, who entered the game in the third period, allowed 3 goals on 12 shots. However, against Marist on Saturday, things went much different for Penn. The Quakers came out hard against the Red Foxes. Captain Micah Cohen capitalized on Penn’s early intensity, scoring just over two minutes into the game. The senior skated the puck down the right side of the ice and blew by a Red Fox defenseman. Cohen headed toward the net and took a shot. The rebound squirted out and Cohen kept barreling forward, managing to slap the puck into the back of the net, giving the Quakers an early 1-0 lead. Penn scored four more times in the first period. Zach Kaplan earned high marks as a playmaker (3 assists), while fellow defenseman Tyler Wallen added two more assists. The Quakers controlled the rest of the game as they went on to win 8-2. In his first start of the season, sophomore Alex May made 16 saves in helping Penn to the victory. Penn has two Family Weekend games at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink coming up. Tonight the Quakers will take on Super East power Montclair State University at 7:00pm and on Saturday they play their third MACHA game of the season against Lafayette College at 4:00pm.
