Skating Quakers Earn Two Wins at Home Over Family Weekend

By Jeff Greenwald (November 5. 2004)

The Penn Men’s Ice Hockey team knew that the results of their home games over Family Weekend would help to set an important tone as the Quakers head into a crucial stretch leading up to the winter break.

Penn, facing Montclair from the tough Super East league and Lafayette, a new addition to the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association, sweated it out during the first two periods of each game before taking control in the final frame.

On Friday night against Montclair, the Quakers (8-2-0, 3-0-0 MACHA) struck early. Sophomore defenseman Matt Bessette found senior Micah Cohen driving through center ice. Cohen brought the puck into the zone and delayed, giving line-mate Andy Kantrovitz time to streak down the left side of the ice. Kantrovitz was able to outwork his defender and Cohen laid a perfect pass on his stick as the junior went around Red Hawks goalie Joe Balance and slid the puck along the ice to give the Quakers an early 1-0 lead.

But Montclair would answer quickly, tying the score a few minutes later.

The Quakers came back with a flurry—junior Robert Rennert and Cohen tallied goals before the end of the first period—and Penn went into the locker room leading 3-1.

The Red Hawks (8-6-1, 2-1-0 Super East), however, would not go quietly. Montclair outplayed the Quakers in the second period scoring three times while Penn only tallied one. Although Penn did not fall behind, the momentum was definitely slipping away from the Quakers.

This was the first game this season in which Penn was not losing or winning handily late in the game—seven of the previous eight games won by the Quakers, were decided by six or more goals. Penn showed it has the ability to separate itself from competitive teams late in the game, coming out strong in the third.

Jeff Greenberg tallied his third goal of the season early in the third period to put the Quakers ahead for good. Penn went on to defeat Montclair 7-5.

On Saturday afternoon, Lafayette came out very physical against the Quakers and it took a few minutes for the Penn players to adjust following a wide-open night of hockey on Friday. Penn’s checking line, which features 230 pound Bill Breedlove was up to the challenge, as the sophomore banged home the Red and Blue’s first goal of the game.

Penn would never relinquish the lead, but the Leopards refused to let the Quakers run away with the game. Assistant captain Cale Spaulding put in his team-leading 12th goal of the season during the second period. The Leopards notched a goal of their own before the teams went to the locker room with the Quakers leading 2-1.

In the third period the Penn offense exploded. Spaulding put in his second of the game after a beautiful pass from Justin Mascitelli gave the junior a breakaway opportunity. Cohen added his third and fourth goals of the weekend and Matt Bessette, who leads all defenseman with six goals, scored another to assure the Quakers a 6-1 victory.

Mark Tyson earned his sixth and seventh wins of the season, stopping 22 of 23 shots against the Leopards.

Penn is faced with two tough MACHA games this weekend. The Quakers play perennial MACHA contender Rider on Friday at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink. Penn fell to the Broncos in both regular season games last season. On Saturday the Quakers travel to Lafayette for a rematch of Friday night’s game.
