  • The Coach's Corner!!

Hello Penn fans and family, and welcome to another edition of the Coach’s Corner.  This is a special weekend, as many parents and families are in town, so I would like to take this opportunity to send out a very special welcome to you all.  As coach, as a part of this team, and as a fan, it's wonderful to have you all here and I hope you have a great weekend!!!
In the past few weeks, I've been asked about this hockey team and how I would describe it.  This past week has given me the definition that I need and it comes in one word--fortitude.  The word itself means resoluteness, determination and the ability to stand strong in the face of adversity.  In a nutshell, that is what this year's Penn Team is all about.  This past week, midterms hit and I do not think that there was a single player who did not have one, if not two or three, exams to study for.  To make matters worse, a pesky flu bug has been making its way around the locker room, causing many players to get sick with colds, congestion and fatigue.  What impressed me the most about this team was how they rose above all that this past weekend in league games against last year's MACHA division finalists.  Many players would have called in sick, or said that they needed to study and abandoned the team.  Not these guys though.  They worked hard at practice, through sniffles, coughs and open books and came ready to play against two of the hardest teams we'd face all season.
Friday was a slugfest against Monmouth.  It was clear from the onset that both teams were thinking offense.  From a coaching standpoint, I think I came closer to having a heart attack than most 22 year olds come, however, the kids from Penn stuck with it and bore down when the needed to (and scored goals when they needed to).  After squandering a second period 7-5 lead and a third period 9-7 lead, Penn took the lead for good when Todd Leri scored the game winner with 5 minutes left.  He then iced the game with an empty netter to give Penn a very big 11-9 victory.
The following night we headed up to visit last year's champs, the Rider Broncs.  Although falling behind 2-0 early, Penn battled back to tie the game at 3, only to give up a late goal at the end of the second period. While they came out flying in the third period, it was not to be a glorious comeback for the Quakers.  Despite out-shooting the Broncs 35-29 and clearly outplaying them, Rider's homerun passes were just too much for the battle-scarred, worn down Penn team, as they lost 6-4.  However, I just dare Rider to try to do the same this Friday, cause we're ready for it now.
Well that's about all for now.  Hope you have a great time this weekend!!!
Again, thank you so much for the support.  We'll see you at the rink!!!!

Todd Leri, MACHA Player of the Week

Penn forward Todd Leri tallied 6 goals and added a pair of assists to earn Player of the Week Honors.   Leri scored 5 of the Quakers' last 6 goals (assisting on the other) in 11-9 victory over Monmouth on 10/20. He also had a goal and an assist in a losing effort against Rider on 10/21.
