Quakers roll over Millersville, squeak past
No. 11 UMBC The #10 Penn men’s ice hockey team looked to get a lift going into the Thanksgiving break after a dismal 13-4 performance against Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association rival Wagner on November 14th. The Quakers bounced back of Friday night with a commanding performance against Millersville, a former MACHA team, before slipping past a strong #11 University of Maryland-Baltimore County squad. The weekend did not start off bright for Penn as Millersville’s Bill Cleary banged home a rebound in front of the net just 34 seconds into the game. But the Marauders would not hold the lead for long. In just his third game for Penn, sophomore transfer Brian Goldberger received a pass from freshman Kyle Textor and nailed a slap shot past Millersville’s Justin Zeuggin to tie the game. The Quakers dominated the rest of the first period, firing 18 shots on goal compared to just five by the Marauders. However, Zeuggin came up big for Millersville, making diving saves and doing a descent job of controlling his rebounds. The Quakers finally broke through with just more than seven minutes remaining in the period. Senior captain Mikah Cohen, who leads the Quakers with 35 points, took a pass from line-mate Pat Linneman and beat Zeuggin. With a 2-1 lead, Penn did not look back. The Quakers scored the next seven goals and forced the Maruaders to pull Zeuggin and replace him with backup Randy Porter. Sophomore goalie Alex May made 15 saves and Penn ended the night with a 13-3 victory. Assistant captain Cale Spaulding scored four goals, Cohen finished with a goal and three assists, and Linneman added two goals and two assists to the effort. Saturday was not as easy for the Red and Blue. Freshman Jeff Greenberg got the Quakers started on the right foot as he went around UMBC goaltender Darren Dellolo and slid the puck along the ice to give the Quakers an early 1-0 lead. UMBC, unlike Millersville, had an answer for the Quakers. The Ice Dawgs tied the game as sophomore Rob Stella put a rebound from Travis White past Penn goalie Mark Tyson. The teams would trade the next 6 goals with UMBC tying the game, 4-4, with just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation. UMBC sophomore Chris Post plagued the Quakers all day has he recorded a hat trick including the game tying goal. For much of the game Quakers forward Justin Mascitelli and Post battled it out across the ice, at times even taking their feud onto the bench. Mascitelli and the Quakers needed a spark to overcome the Ice Dawgs and they found it again in the form of Spaulding. The junior seemed to take over the game as he scored one goal off assists from Cohen and Greenberg and then hit the goal from center ice after the Ice Dawgs pulled Dellolo in a last ditch effort. Spaulding finished the game with two goals and three assists, while Greenberg put home two goals of his own and added two assists. The Quakers will face Columbia
University for the first time ever on Friday, December 3rd at the Class of 1923
Ice Rink. The puck drops at 7 p.m. |
