Quakers Fall In MACHA Semi-Finals to Princeton
On Friday night, the Quakers got off to a slow start against Rider giving up a goal just 29 seconds into the game. The Broncs led 1-0 till late in the period when Todd Leri put home a feed from captain Micah Cohen to tie the game. The Quakers came out flying in the second period but the score remained tied until the 6:20 mark. Assistant captain Pat Linneman fired home a shot from the left side of the ice beating Rider goalie Mike Makovec down low. After the ensuing face-off, Linneman got the puck and blazed down the right side of the ice and fired home a second goal just eleven seconds later to give Penn a quick 3-1 lead. Freshman Greg DeHaydu added a power-play goal minutes later and Penn seemed to be in control with a 4-1 lead. However, penalties put the Quakers down two-men and Rider capitalized scoring on both the five-on-three and five-on-four power-plays. Freshman Jeff Greenberg got the momentum back on Penn's side scoring with a minute left in the period to make the score 5-3. Penn maintained its two-goal lead throughout the first 12 minutes of the third period before going on a scoring barrage that saw four goals in four minutes, including a power play goal by sophomore Bill Breedlove and a short-handed tally by Leri. Rider went on to add a late goal, making the final score 9-4. The Quakers out-shot the Broncs 38 to 26. Junior goalie Mark Tyson made 22 saves in the victory. Friday's win advanced Penn to the semi-finals where they faced-off against Princeton. The game was guaranteed to be exciting as the two teams had split their regular season match-ups. Once again, Penn got off to a terrible start giving up an early goal less than one minute into the game. The Tigers continued to dominate play for the next 10 minutes adding a power play goal near the midway point of the period to take a 2-0 lead. At that point, the Quakers we being out-shot 8-2. The two goal deficit woke-up the Penn bench as they turned up the intensity for the second half of the period, dominating the play. Numerous opportunities were had but Princeton goalie Evan Graboyes could not be beat. At the end of the first period, Penn trailed 2-0 despite out-shooting the Tigers 17-9. The second period was hard fought by both teams but goaltending stole the show. Both Tyson and Graboyes turned away all of the shots they faced. Four minutes into the third period, Leri brought the Quakers within one when he banged home the rebound of Cohen's shot from the top of the circle. Graboyes play terrific the remainder of the period turning away shot after shot. With Tyson pulled for the extra-attacker, the Tigers added one more in the last minute of the game to seal the victory. A 48-29 advantage in shots was not enough as Penn fell 3-1. Princeton went on to win the MACHA Championship the next day defeating defending champion Wagner College 3-2 in overtime. Penn will be playing in an exhibition game on April 17, 2005 against the Philadelphia Legends, a team made up of former Philadelphia Flyers. The game, a fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, will be played at the Wachovia Spectrum prior to the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms Game.
