5th Annual Liberty Bell Invitational

On September 24 th and 25 th, the University of Pennsylvania Men ’s Ice Hockey Team will host the 5 th Annual Liberty Bell Invitational at Penn’s Class of 1923 Ice Rink. The teams featured in this year’s tournament are the University of Pennsylvania , Saint Joseph ’s University, Temple University , and Villanova University.

The first game of the weekend will be a rematch of the 2003 championship game in which Villanova defeated St. Joe’s 6-5 in an overtime thriller to claim their first ever Liberty Bell championship. Saturday’s second game pits Temple against defending Liberty Bell champion Penn. This will be the first of three games to be played between the two teams over the upcoming season.

In light of the recent tragedies, a portion of the funds raised over the weekend will be donated to the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Fundraisers will include raffles and an opportunity to meet local celebrities. On Sunday, the Penn Band will be present for Penn’s game.

The purpose of the Liberty Bell Invitational is to promote healthy competition among Philadelphia college hockey teams. To that end, we hope to expose local high school and youth hockey players to the quality college hockey available to them in the area. In an effort to further this mission, all youth and high school hockey players will be admitted free of charge to all of this weekend’s games.

Below is a short excerpt from the Philadelphia Inquirer of the game.....

Last night, the Flyers and Phantoms played an intrasquad scrimmage at the Skate Zone to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"Tonight was great," winger Mike Knuble said. "It was a charity game for a good cause that helped people and it was played at a good pace. It was great to get something like this in to help the cause."

The sold-out game raised $7,500 in ticket sales alone for hurricane victims... . Some players signed autographs between the second and third periods... . Al Morganti's Team Orange beat Keith Jones' Team Black, 5-3.
