Quakers Off to a Shakey Start
The Penn Men’s Ice Hockey Team is off to a slow start just over a month into the 2005-2006 season. With a 3-5-3 overall record and an MACHA record of just 1-2-2, the Quakers have plenty of room for improvement. Penn has put up only 30 goals through the first 11 games of season. At this time last year, the team had tailed 83 goals and amassed a 9-2-0 record. However, despite the slow start, the attitude in the locker-room is optimistic as Penn heads into a streak of 8 straight MACHA contests and an opportunity to move up in the standings.
This past weekend Penn hosted Seton Hall on Friday night. The Pirates came out playing tough and scored a goal in the final seconds of the first period that allowed them to capture the early momentum and a 1-0 lead. The Quakers struck back in the second on a Cale Spaulding goal less than 5 minutes into the period. Penn continued to dominate the Pirates for the remainder of regulation, out-shooting them 24-10 in the final two periods. However, with the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams headed to overtime. Play remained in the Seton Hall end throughout the five minute sudden-death period, but despite giving up no shots and hitting 2 posts, Penn was unable to pull out the victory. The tie marked the first points Seton Hall had been able to steal from the Quakers in league play since their joining the MACHA in 2002.
On Saturday, Penn traveled to Staten Island to take on the nationally ranked Wagner Seahawks. The Quakers came out flying in the first period as they controlled play early in the Wagner offensive zone. A defensive lapse with five minutes to go in the period gave Wagner an early 1-0 lead. The Seahawks jumped all over Penn in the second period, putting up five goals, including two shorthanded tallies. The Quakers only goal of the game came late in the third period from Spaulding, who put home a cross ice pass from Pat Linneman. Plagued by a short bench and an inability to find the net, Penn skated away with a disappointing 8-1 loss.
This weekend’s Homecoming games will pit Penn against familiar foes. On Friday, Rider University comes to the Class of 1923 ice rink. Penn defeated the Boncs 5-0 earlier in the season. On Saturday, Princeton University, last year’s MACHA champion, comes into town. The Tigers are currently 4-2-1. Prior to Saturday’s game, the first Penn Hockey Alumni Game in recent memory will be played. Over 20 former players are expected for the event.
