PENN TURNS THINGS AROUND IN NOVEMBER

Despite getting off to a slow start in the first month of the season the Quakers are now one game above .500 at 8-7-4. The month of November included 4 wins, just one loss, and a 5-game unbeaten streak. More importantly, during this stretch Penn picked up 9 points in MACHA play and vaulted themselves into third place in the league. The only loss of month came at the hands of the Princeton Tigers, last year's league champions.

This past Friday, Penn was able to extend its unbeaten streak to 6 games with a dramatic third period comeback win over cross-town rival St. Joseph University. The Hawks scored the first and only goal early in the first period when a slap shot from the point was deflected downward by SJU's John Britton and past Penn goalie Mark Tyson. Penn answered early in the second period with a corner high shot goal by captain Justin Mascitelli to tie the score at 1-1. The Hawks took back the momentum later in the period as they managed to add two more goals and take a 3-1 lead into the intermission. If any Penn fans were beginning to lose faith they had had little reason to worry. Penn rallied hard in the 3rd period to score 5 unanswered goals. The first of the period came when freshman Dave Farber, playing in his first game of the season, put home a power-play goal 5 minutes into the period. Minutes later, leading scorer Cale Spaulding tied the game at 3-3 before Farber would notch his second goal of the night to secure the lead. The Quakers added 2 empty net goals in the final minutes of the period. Penn dominated the Hawk zone throughout the 3rd period with 16 shots on goal, surpassing the 15 they managed in the first two periods. Tyson turned away 17 shots in the win. Final score was 6-3, truly an exciting game!

On Sunday, the Quakers winning streak came to and end when they traveled north into New Jersey to take on the William Paterson Pioneers. Despite a hard fought first period in which Penn had numerous scoring chances, they trailed 1-0 at the intermission as WPU scored their first goal of the night as the buzzard sounded. With the momentum on their side the Pioneers came out fast in the second and took a 2-0 lead just two minutes into the period. Penn looked sluggish throughout the remainder of the game being out-shot 20-10 in the final periods. WPU goalie Joe Vincent put forth a solid effort in leading his team to a 3-0 shutout victory over Penn.

This weekend Penn closes out the season with two important games. On Friday they travel to Happy Valley to take on Penn State, currently ranked #2 in the Northeast region. Saturday Penn returns home to take on the UMBC Retrievers at 7pm.

ALUMNI GAME A HUGE SUCCESS

On November 4th, twenty-five Penn alumni returned to the Class of 1923 Ice Rink for the first alumni game in recent memory. A broad range of classes was represented as former Penn Hockey players from 1959 through 2005 participated. The game itself lacked much defense, with the Blue team defeating the squad in Red by a score of 9-6. Next season we hope for an even larger turnout.
