PENN OFF TO PROMISING START IN 2006

The Quakers jumped out to a quick start to the second semester with two big home wins over California State-Long Beach and Central Connecticut State University. The wins put the Penn squad in good position to move up in the national rankings, which determine eligibility for the national playoffs.

A five-goal third period cemented a Quaker win over a physical Long Beach team that for two periods would not succumb to a strong offensive attack Friday night at the Class of 1923 arena.

The Quakers gave up a goal early, but tied it later in the first on a shot from junior defenseman Matt Bessette from the blue line. Long Beach again took the lead in the second, but the Quakers answered with consecutive goals from sophomore forward Jeff Greenberg and senior forward Cale Spaulding and headed into the third ahead 3-2.

Long Beach once again managed to tie the game on an outside shot that squirted past junior goaltender Matt Weyandt, but Spaulding completed a hat trick with two consecutive goals in the middle of the period to cement the game. The Quakers added three more goals in an explosive third period and finished the game 8-3.

Weyandt finished a strong effort with 22 saves off 25 shots, and notched his sixth win of the season.

The win brought the Quakers overall record to 10-8-4 and propelled the team into Saturday’s game against a Central Connecticut squad ranked 5th in the ACHA’s northeast division.

The hard-fought game against Central Connecticut State would come down to the wire, but strong goaltending and an aggressive forecheck would cement the victory for the Penn squad.

Like they had the night before, the Quakers fell behind early, but finished the first period with a 2-1 lead after consecutive goals from seniors Pat Linneman and Rob Rennert. The CCSU squad would tie it at the beginning of the second period, but Linneman would add his second tally of the night in the last minute of the period to head to the locker room with a 3-2 lead.

The third period was back and forth, with both teams notching a combined 30 shots. The Quakers would add an insurance goal from freshman Dave Farber early in the third and ride the strong goaltending of senior Mark Tyson (44 saves) to the eventual win. CCSU would add a goal in the last minute with a pulled goalie, but could not make up the two-goal difference.

At 11-8-4 the Quakers head into another homestand this weekend with games against MACHA league-leading Wagner (2 nd in the ACHA southeast) Friday night and the University of Virginia on Saturday.

Penn is currently ranked 10th in the ACHA Southeast Region, with two games to play before the new rankings are released. The top 10 teams in each region will be invited to the regional tournament in February to play for a shot at the national championship.
