Quakers Split Over Weekend The Quakers stumbled in their second weekend of hockey of 2006, ending a chance to extend a three-game winning streak. The team went 1-1 over the home weekend, losing 10-0 to the league-leading Wagner Seahawks and beating the Virginia Cavaliers 5-4 with some last-minute heroics. The Quakers team had few highlights in the loss to the Seahawks Friday night. Wagner scored early and often taking advantage of Penn’s sluggish defense, and the Quakers squad couldn’t mount much of an offensive attack in the lopsided defeat. Despite the final score, the Quakers kept the game close through much of the first and second periods. Wagner notched its first goal just 1:12 into the game, but it was the only score of the period. The visiting team notched three more in the second, and overran the Penn squad in the third adding six more. Saturday’s game marked a much needed turnaround for the Penn squad. The team came into the game with the passion that had been lacking the night before, but the puck couldn’t find the back of the net in the first. The Quakers controlled the period in the Cavaliers zone, but mustered only 12 shots. The second period would prove to be the best of Penn’s weekend. Freshman Dave Farber notched the game’s first goal just 1:24 into the period, followed shortly after by a goal from senior Pat Linneman. By the end of the period, Penn held strongly onto a 4-1 lead, and looked to be running away with the game. The Cavaliers didn’t roll over so easily, though, and mounted a steady comeback in the third, culminating in the game-tying goal with 11 minutes remaining. The game would remain tied until junior defenseman Ned Swanson fired a slap shot from the blue line off of sophomore Jeff Greenberg’s face-off win to take the lead with 1:09 remaining. Goaltender Mark Tyson (27 saves) would seal the win with several key stops in the last minute. The weekend brought the Quakers to 7-5-3 in the MACHA and 12-9-4 overall. The team heads to the Washington, D.C. area for an overnight trip this weekend for a league game against University of Maryland-Baltimore County and a non-league game at Georgetown. The fourth national rankings of the year are due out this week, and the Quakers look to remain in the top 10 in the Southeast in order to stay in contention for the ACHA regional tournament. |
