A word from the president....
| I wanted to take this opportunity to thank
everybody who has helped to make PENN hockey a success this year.
The support that was shown this past weekend from friends and family was
tremendous. It was great to have such a vast array of family members
from all over the country present for last weekend's games. Second,
I want to thank Anne Deger and Cara Kusko. Anne and Cara are this
year's managers. Aside from running the clock and keeping score at
home games, they meet and great all visiting teams and make sure that any
last minute chores are taken care of so that the team can focus on
playing hockey before all games. An extra special thank you goes
out to Cara who baked and organized all the food for last weekend's family
gathering at the rink. Both Anne and Cara volunteer their time to
the team and usually get nothing more than a lot of grief in return.
Speaking of volunteers, this year's team has been graced with two terrific coaches. Dean Winter joined the coaching staff this fall and should be an integral part of the Quaker organization for many year's to come. Dean travels one hour each practice night, usually not getting home till well after midnight. In addition to coaching Penn, Dean coaches his son's high school team. At the other end of the bench is Penn graduate Josh Remick '00. Josh currently holds down a full time job in Center City and is applying to most of the country's finest medical schools. Josh has been a great help to me both on and off the ice and without him the strides this program as made in the past year would not have been accomplished. Dean and Josh unselfishly donate their time to the program week in and week out. Lastly, I want to thank all of the players. While balancing one of the toughest academic environments in the country they still find the time to make hockey an important part of their lives. Giving up weeknights to practice and weekends to play games, these guys show much more dedication and determination than they will ever receive credit for. Without them there would be no team. In addition, it is important to thank Dr. Mike Diorka and the Department of Recreation, which has provided funding for the team as generously as possible. Finally, thank you to the alumni, whose each and every contribution beneficially impacts on the Penn Hockey program. Without all the above people who give so much and receive so little in return, hockey at Penn would not be the reality it is today. Sincerely,
R. Whit Matthews '02

Coach's Corner
| Hello hockey fans and welcome to another edition of the
Coach's Corner!
What can I say? Finally, all the talk, all the promises and all the guarantees (by myself) have begun to be fulfilled by the Quakers. This past weekend was perhaps the biggest in Penn Hockey History. Friday night, they stormed out of the gates and left William Patterson University wondering where the game went. It was a solid team contribution, with everyone stepping up and joining in the attack. The confidence level was high after the 9-1 trouncing on Friday night as we prepared to face #3 ranked NYU in New York. No one really knew what to expect on Saturday. All we knew was that it would be a battle. It was a hard hitting, tight checking and incredibly intense game. Penn overcame 1-0 and 3-1 deficits in the first and second periods, then played a flawless third period, with captain Colby Zaph scoring the game winner with 46 seconds left on the clock. NYU didn't know what hit them, but we did. We knew we could beat any team we faced this season, and Saturday night proved that Penn is for real. With little time to recover, Penn traveled to Temple to take on the Owls last night. Temple came out angry, for it was this same Penn team that defeated the Owls in the DVCHC championship last season. After a gigantic win like the NYU game, it was no surprise that Penn came out a little flat. However, even without their "A" game, Penn rolled to another victory--their fourth straight--10 to 6. This weekend, Penn hits the road, even though the alumni are returning home. We're sorry we won't be there for you all to come and see a game, but c'est la vie. With games at Millersville on Friday and Monmouth on Saturday, Penn hopes to continue its hot play and roll into the National Ranking scene. Well, that's all for this week! See you all at the rink!!!
