Quakers Go 1-1 Over Homecoming Weekend

The Penn Quakers came together for a big win on Friday night against Ivy League rival Columbia.  With a rowdy Homecoming crowd at the Class of 1923 Rink to cheer them on, Penn put up 8 goals.  The goals came from both the offense and defense making it a true team effort.  Both assistant captains, Jeff Greenberg and Ned Swanson, helped their team with a goal each and there were big contributions from freshmen Sam Lerer and Riley Tagtmeyer who each put up two goals.  Junior Matt Donnally made a notable performance as he tallied his first goal as a Quaker this year.  Senior Goalie Matt Weyandt also had a huge game in net coming up with 17 saves as he achieved his first shutout of the season.  Overall, the 8-0 win was an important one for Penn and a great way to turn the season around after a slow start.

Rolling off their Friday night win against Columbia, Penn came out ready to compete against the Princeton Tigers. The Quakers had energy and support in the game right from the start, as many Penn Hockey Alumni came out to support the team.  The Quakers put in two quick goals to end the first period with an early 2-1 lead. Despite the Tigers 1st place MACHA ranking, Penn stayed right with them throughout the second period.  However, a variety of penalties plagued the Quakers with short-handed penalty kills, which continued into the 3rd period.  After going down 3-5 early in the third period, the Quakers rallied together and tied up the game late in the period, as Riley Tagtmeyer and Captain Matt Bessette each scored.  In the final seconds of the third period, Sam Lerer came close to getting his third goal and ending the game on a last-second breakaway but the period ended just before he could put the puck away.  A hard-fought overtime was nearly ended by Penn with some quick offensive chances but a questionable too-many-men penalty call left the Quakers shorthanded in the final minutes of OT.  On the ensuing powerplay a Princeton shot slipped past Weyandt, ending the game, 6-5.  The Princeton game was a tough loss for Penn but a huge improvement over games earlier in the season.  The team has come together well in recent weeks and is optimistic about their chances of success throughout the rest of the season.
