Quakers Battle
Tough But Come Up Winless
The Quakers took a major step forward
this weekend in their game against St. Joes. When the teams last
met earlier this season at the Liberty Bell Invitational, the Hawks
outplayed Penn, winning 6-2. Not only did that game leave the
Quakers with a chip on their shoulder, it gave them motivation to work
harder. Under the guidance of new coach Brian Gallini, the Quakers came
ready to play and prove a point this past weekend. From the start
of the game, it was apparent that this was not the same Penn squad as
the one that played at the Liberty Bell. Although the Hawks
scored first, Penn came right back with a goal early in the second when
Tim Siegmund was able to put in his own rebound. However,
Penn was once again put in a hole as St. Joes was able to net their
second goal of the game. After an emotional intermission, the
Quakers came back strong, as junior captain Jeff Greenberg put away two
goals in the third. The Quakers were feeling confident when the
Hawks put in a third goal, tying the game. In the waning seconds
of the period, things looked bleak for the Quakers as one of the Hawk
players had a wide open net in front. However, goaltender Matt
Weyandt made a spectacular save to send the game into overtime.
The overtime period was hard-fought but in the end, time expired
without any overtime goals being scored and the Quakers were left once
again without their much needed first league win. The final score
was Penn 3, St. Joes 3.
The Quakers went into Saturday's game against Seton Hall still thirsty
for their first league win. In a very quiet and low scoring game, Penn
was unfortunately unable to come away with their first 'W". The
Quakers went down early, with Seton Hall putting up a goal in the first
period. There were no goals in the second. Then, at the
start of the third, Jeff Greenberg was once again able to lift the
Quakers, tying the game at one apiece. However, this did not last
long as Seton Hall netted its second and game-winning goal. As in
the previous day’s game, goaltender Matt Weyandt played amazing in
net. This was a tough 2-1 loss for the Quakers but despite their
disappointment, they continued to hold their heads high as they prepare
for the upcoming weekend against Liberty and Wagner.
