Penn Defeats
Liberty, Drops One to Wagner
The Quakers started last
weekend off on the right foot with a decisive win against Liberty
University. As the two teams sized each other up in the first
period, Zack Kaplan helped Penn set the tone for the game early when he
scored his first goal of the season in the opening minutes of the
period. The Quakers continued to control the play throughout the
period and secured a two-goal lead with the help of senior Jeff
Greenwald whose rebound-goal was all hard work and hustle.
Despite their lead, the Quakers knew they needed to come out with more
energy in the second period in order to maintain their hold on the
game. Liberty’s frustration was obvious as the increasingly
chippy game-play led to a number of penalties on both teams.
However, Penn’s strong offensive presence helped them to continue
pounding shots on Liberty’s goalie and end the period on a strong
note. Matt Bessette put on a show for the crowd, single-handedly
skating the puck into the offensive zone and slipping a well-placed
shot in to make the score 3-0 heading into the third period. The
final period started off slowly but a cross-ice pass from Jeff
Greenberg put Tim Horn in great position to score, which he did, giving
the Quakers a 4-0 lead. Throughout the game, Matt Weyandt came up
with some huge saves for the Quakers, stopping a number of odd-man
rushes that got past the defense, but a late mix-up in front of the net
lead to Liberty’s only goal. Despite the defensive lapse in the
third period, Penn’s 4-1 win sent a message to competitors that they
will defend their home ice with intensity. This mentality would
help them in their big game against the nationally-ranked Wagner
Seahawks the following day.
The Quakers went into their
sixth MACHA league game against Wagner knowing how important a win
could be for them. With energy and home-ice to their advantage,
it looked like Penn had the Seahawks under control throughout the
majority of the game. Tim Horn succeeded in scoring the first
goal of the game and gave his team the confidence they needed to hold
onto their lead for the rest of the period. Penn’s entire team
contributed to the defensive effort that held Wagner scoreless in the
first half of the game. The defense was headed up by Weyandt’s
continued terrific play in net as he stopped a steady barrage of shots
from the slot and points. In the third period, a flurry of goals
slipped in against the Quakers, many of them coming from shots
completely screened from the view of Weyandt. Despite how well
the first two periods had gone for the Quakers, a loss of composure and
discipline in the third period allowed the game to slip away from them
in the final period. Regardless of the 6-1 loss, the first two
periods showed that Penn is ready to play and compete with any team in
its league.
