Quakers Earn First MACHA Win In Overtime

After their loss to Wagner, Penn was ready to make a statement in the MACHA.  They practiced hard all week and came ready to play against Rider.  Unfortunately, they came out flat, quickly finding themselves in a 2 goal deficit.  However, the Quakers were able to bounce back quickly, tying the game back up at 2 before the end of the period on goals scored by Dave Farber on a breakaway and a rebound put home by Zach Kaplan.  The second period was similar to the first, with Farber netting his second goal of the game.  At the start of the third the score was 3-3.  Early into the period, Kaplan was also able to make his presence known for the second time in the game as well, putting Penn up by one.  At this point, the Quakers were finally in a position to win their first league game, having a one goal lead until late into the third.   However, this was spoiled late with a Rider goal on a two-man power-play.  Yet again, Penn was looking directly into the eyes of overtime.  Confident in their play throughout the game, the Quakers were not intimidated.  This confidence quickly paid off as Farber was able to complete his hat-trick in his first shift of the overtime period.  Penn finally received their first notch in the win column in MACHA play, defeating Rider 5-4.

On Saturday, the Quakers made the short journey north to the Philadelphia Skatezone to take on Temple, a team that had defeated Penn 6-0 at the Liberty Bell Invitational earlier in the season. Feeding off the emotion from the night before, Penn took an early lead off a slap-shot from captain Matt Bessette.  However, the Owls bounced back with 2 quick goals before the end of the first period.  After an emotional intermission, the Quakers played arguably their best
period of hockey this season in the second.  Like the night before, Kaplan and Farber put in all 3 goals scored in the second, with Kaplan scoring 2 of them.  Although this put the Quakers up 4-2, it did not last long as the Owls tied the game before the end of the period.  It should be noted that goaltender Matt Weyandt was playing though a serious groin injury and was still able to make many miraculous saves.  The third period can be summarized in one word – penalties.  Penn gave up two 5-on-3-goals, which were unfortunately the only two goals scored in
the third for both sides, resulting in a 4-6 loss.  Although this game did not result in a victory, it displayed the improvements that the Quakers have been making since their early season struggles.
