Quakers Go 1-1 to Finish Out January

Penn bounced back from a disappointing weekend with two solid games against two top teams. On Friday, Penn downed Division I Villanova, 2-1. The Quakers then trekked to State College, Pa. where they fell to Penn State 1-0.

In Friday’s game, Penn looked to take advantage of the struggling Wildcats, who came in at just 2-16-1 and had already lost to three other MACHA teams—two of those losses came in the Liberty Bell Invitational which Penn hosted in September.

Penn kicked off the game’s scoring halfway through the first period with a power play goal. Penn’s special teams unit has struggled so far this season, but the Quakers were able to settle the puck in the offensive zone and stretch the Wildcat defense. Captain Matt Bessette fed sophomore Dave Farber below the goal line. Farber sent the puck back to sophomore Tim Sigmund at the hash along the board, and Sigmund walked in a few feet before ripping a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Villanova’s goalie.

Villanova stormed back in the second period with an even strength goal. The game appeared as if it would go to overtime, which would have been Penn’s seventh extra frame of the season. But late in the third period, freshman Sam Lerer hit a bouncing rebound in the slot into the top-right corner of the net. It was the 16th goal of the season for Lerer, who leads the Quakers. Farber and captain Jeff Greenberg had assists on the play—Greenberg leads the Quakers with 23 assists on the season.

Goalie Matt Weyandt again kept the Quakers in the game saving 52 shots. Penn only managed 16 shots for the game, but still managed to come away with the win.

On Saturday, Penn traveled to Penn State, a team ranked fourth in the Northeast and that has dominated Penn in recent years. The Quakers played one of their best games of the season, but a Penn State goal in the first period was the only goal in the game. Matt Weyandt had yet another spectacular game in the net, saving 52 of Penn State’s 53 shots.

The result was the best Penn has had against the Icers in recent memory.
