Beats Columbia, 5-2
by Matt Harris
Despite racking up an impressive amount
of goals in the first few games of the season, Coach Brian Gallini and
the Quakers started Friday’s home game against Columbia still winless
with a record of 0-3-1.
“We've spent a tremendous amount of time over the 2 weeks trying to
beef up our defensive zone coverage in an effort to limit our
opponent's shots, or at least the quality of those shots.” Coach
Gallini said before Friday’s game.
Their work paid off.
The squad earned its fist victory of the season, trouncing the Columbia
Lions 5-2, limiting Columbia’s shots to 20, and pelting the opposing
goaltender with over 30.
The Quakers were in the penalty box early as Zack Kaplan was whistled
for roughing. Being short-handed didn’t stop the Quakers from
attacking. David Farber scored two goals while the Quakers were a man
down and goaltender Berkeley Dietvorst put on a show, stopping several
Columbia scoring chances, including an early two-on-one break, and the
Quakers left the first period with a 2-0 lead.
Dietvorst kept it a two-goal game in the second when he stopped a
Columbia player who gained the Quaker zone and took off with a full
head of steam on a clean breakaway. Hal Mackenzie was a physical
presence as he delivered a crushing open ice hit, and Jeff Greenberg
followed up on a Nicolas Ryder shot to make it 3-0 going into the
third.
Columbia crawled back to within 2 with a clever one-on-one move as a
Columbia player beat a Penn defender and squeezed a quick shot past
Dietvorst. Penn rebuilt their lead as Riley Tagtmeyer settled a loose
puck and rifled a wrist-shot over the right shoulder of the Columbia
goaltender to make the score 4-1. The Lions cut the deficit again,
scoring from an odd angle after the Quakers failed to clear the puck,
but Captain Jeff Greenberg added his second goal of the game late in
the third to seal the victory for the home team.
Penn appeared to be the superior team from the outset as they
controlled play with tape-to-tape passing while generating shots on
net,
but the Columbia goaltender played strong as he found ways to block
most of what the Quakers threw at him.
“We should have poured it on even more against these guys,” Coach
Gallini said after the game.
The Quakers will face more difficult competition over Homecoming
weekend when they host back-to-back Friday and Saturday night games
against Wagner College and William Paterson University, respectively.
