Penn
Grabs Two MACHA Wins From Local Rivals by Matt Harris On Friday, November 16th Janne Tiskanen recorded a hat trick, including the game winner, as Penn overcame a three goal deficit, scoring four goals in the third period, and holding off Temple during the last five minutes to win an important league game by a score of 5-4. Tiskanen opened the scoring in the first period by collaborating with Jeff Greenberg on a nifty give-and-go play that started from center ice and ended with Tiskanen firing a wrist-shot over the shoulder of the Temple goaltender. In the second period, down 2-1, Penn scored what appeared to be the equalizer, but the officials waved it off to the disbelief of the Penn bench and fans. Temple then scored the next two goals, making it 4-1, and setting the stage for the dramatic third period. David Farber started it off by maneuvering his way into scoring position and putting the puck in the net with a wrist-shot, making it 4-2. Sam Lerer scored on a slap-shot, capitalizing on a 5 on 3 power play. Janne added his second of the night with the help of Hal Mackenzie and Greenberg, tying the score at 4. The momentum had clearly swung Penn’s way, and it seemed only a matter of time before the home team took the lead. It was Tiskanen, completing the hat trick with another assist from Greenberg, that give Penn the one goal lead with five minutes to play in the third. With the help of Berkeley Dietvorst between the pipes, Penn proceeded to clamp down, keeping Temple off the scoreboard for the last five minutes of the game, securing the victory and the important two points in the standings. Penn continued winning games in heroic fashion the following day as they played yet another local rival in important league game, this time against St. Joe’s. Sam Lerer recorded 3 points in the first period, including 2 goals, and an assist on a goal by Jeff Greenberg. In the second David Farber scored on a breakaway. Dietvorst kept the game tied at 4 to send the game to overtime where Tiskanen scored his second game wining goal of the weekend. Penn hopes to continue its winning streak when they host Lafayette College, Friday November 30th, at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink. Quakers Crush Princeton by Matt Harris Penn earned a victory on November 9th against Princeton by generating their highest goal output of the year, and playing with an energy that seemed to precipitate throughout the entire building. It took the Quaker squad less than a minute to tack up its first goal of the night when Jeff Greenberg and Nicholas Ryder worked the puck out from behind the net, dishing it out in front to a charging Janne Taskinen, who cleanly tapped the puck behind the Princeton goaltender. That would be the beginning of a long night for the Princeton goalie who would eventually surrender a total of seven goals to the fully charged Penn offense. David Farber hammered away at a rebound to make it 2-0 still early in the first period, causing Princeton to immediately take a time-out to try and re-group and take the air out of an energized Penn crowd. The stoppage in play couldn’t quiet the cheering fans as clapping and shouting continued to echo throughout the arena. Sam Lerer fired a shot that banged in off the post and crossbar in dramatic fashion to emphasize a 3-0 lead. The Penn offense was the focal point in this game. Berkeley Dietvorst made some big stops in a solid performance, but for the most part enjoyed a quiet night of work as it was the other team’s goalie who was drilled with over 40 shots. In the second period Taskinen added his second goal of the game when he tucked the puck between the post and the goalie from the side of the net. Princeton tacked on a few and midway through the second the score was close again at 4-3, but the Penn offense responded by scoring two more in the second. Sam Lerer scored his second of the game with assists from O’Brien and Horn, and Jeff Greenberg tallied his third point of the night as he scored his first goal of the game to make it 6-3. The third period saw Princeton’s frustrations reach a boiling point. The game was clearly slipping away from them and a ruckus broke out in front of the Princeton net after a Penn player was knocked to the ice following the whistle. During the melee, Nick Ryder got tangled up with the Princeton goaltender and received a minor penalty and a game disqualification. The Penn fans succeeded in rattling the Princeton goalie who drew a penalty for leaving his crease to bark back at a long row of rowdy Penn fans sitting front and center the whole game. Tim Siegmund added the seventh and final Penn goal of the night in the third period on an assist from the red-hot rookie Taskinen, who recorded his third point of the night. Penn out-shot Princeton 19-1 in the third. On a night that was deemed fan appreciation night, the Penn squad sure gave the fans something to appreciate. |
