Falls to Lafayette by Matt Harris The Quakers took the ice on Friday hoping to extend their season-high winning streak as they faced Lafayette College in MACHA play. With the Class of 1923 Ice Rink newly decorated for the holiday season with a string of colorful lights hanging on the wall, it was Lafayette who was first to light-up the scoreboard. Lafayette would score the first and last goals of the game in a contest during which neither team ever held more than a one goal lead. When the final whistle sounded the visitors were one goal better, winning the contest 6-5. There were four goals scored in the first 13 minutes, two by each team. Penn made it 1-1 in the first period when Janne Taskinen notched the first Quaker goal of the game. The Quakers took a 2-1 lead when Nick Ryder charged the net and pushed in the rebound from a Tim Horn slap-shot. Lafayette tied it up, and in the second period Ryder notched his second goal of the game to give Penn a 3-2 lead. The lead didn’t last long. Seconds later Lafayette tallied its third goal of the game. The Quakers then went up 4-3 as Dave Farber scored a goal unassisted. With Penn up 4-3 Taskinen charged to the net, carrying the puck along the boards, looking to give his team a two goal lead, but he was tripped and sent crashing into the boards behind the net, drawing a minor penalty. After the trip he was unable to leave the ice under his own strength, requiring the help of his teammates, and he was unable to play on the ensuing power play or the rest of the game. In the third period Lafayette tied the game on a tipped shot that clanked in off the crossbar. Again, the Quakers took the lead as Tim Horn finished a sprint from the blue line to the net with a goal that went five-hole. Late in the third Lafayette cashed in on a 5 on 3 power play to tie it at 5. Lafayette took the lead seconds later for good with another goal on the power play. The Quakers look to get back on track when they play Rider University this Friday at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink. |
