  • 2010 Navratri Garba (Friday, October 15th)

    Houston Hall, Hall of Flags
    Time TBA

Join HSC/YJA in celebrating the festival of Navratri at our annual fall Garba! Dance the night away to the traditional Indian folk dances of garba, dandiya raas, and bhangra! During Navratri, Hindus worship the many forms of the Divine Mother (such as Durga, the goddess of war, Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge). Garba consists of dancing simple steps in a circle around one of these deities in celebration of her gifts to us. Raas, which usually accompanies garba, is a folk dance style from the state of Gujarat and entails striking short wooden sticks called dandiya to the rhythm of the music in an organized line dance. The basic steps are relatively easy to learn and a lot of fun! All are welcome and Indian attire is optional!
