Welcome to UPenn MAPS

January 13, 2010

Over the summer, my colleagues and I worked to get MAPS off the ground because we felt strongly that prehealth students of color at Penn needed more of a support system than was available. Therefore, our principal reason for starting MAPS was to create a supportive and encouraging environment in which students would thrive in their prehealth careers. Another reason that drove us to start MAPS on campus is the ever present issue of health care disparities. Study after study has proved that those belonging to a racial or ethnic minority receive poorer health care than non-minorities, even controlling for socioeconomic status. We can no longer sit back and be cowed into doing nothing for those who need us to step up to the plate.
