Initiatives

Paul Robeson Mentoring Program: Onyx co-sponsors the mentoring program with Makuu, the Black Student Cultural Center, for black freshmen as they begin their college careers. The program matches them with upperclassmen of similar academic and extracurricular interests. Each semester, three workshops are held covering various topics including study skills, identity, and much more. Each semester there is also a community service project for all members of the program. Aside from maintaining weekly contact with their mentees, we ask mentors to accompany freshmen as they visit professors or school administrators. Currently, the mentoring program supports relationships between 45 freshmen and 30 upperclassmen.

If you are interested in participating in the mentoring program or attending our events, please feel free to contact Onyx at onyxhs@gmail.com.

Community Service: Onyx participates in a number of community service activities throughout the year, ranging from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to neighborhood soup kitchens. Onyx strongly believes that it is our responsibility to give back so that others might benefit from our gifts.

If you are interested in participating in these activities, please contact Onyx at onyxhs@gmail.com.

Brothers' Outreach: As the first wave of members in Onyx's class of 2005 were inducted into the society, they were struck by the lacking presence of black males. There are many black males that thrive academically and do not become part of a honor society. We made it a top priority to reach out to black men and promote academic excellence among them. We started by having a discussion solely with successful black men on campus. Now we have a dedicated committee working on developing and strengthening the social bonds between black men on campus.

If you are interested in participating in these activities, please contact Onyx at onyxhs@gmail.com.

Alumni Relations: Onyx Alumns started this wonderful tradition of recognizing black achievement on campus. Onyx hopes to develop an alumni advisory board that shall meet regularly to support our initiatives and to guide as well as ensure that Onyx alumni are connected to Onyx members. We hope that stronger participation from alumni throughout the academic year will lend to the society's spirit of continuity.

If you are interested in programming or would like more information, please send an email to onyxhs@gmail.com.

Recognition of Younger Students: Although we attend this university because we have done well academically, students are rarely praised for their academic strength throughout their first few years. Onyx not only seeks to recognize student leaders, but also to celebrate black students throughout their Penn careers.
