Nine years ago, The University of Pennsylvania Band elevated its commitment to music in our region’s schools by partnering with Penn Hospitality Services to create the Penn Band Summer Music Camp.
We expose high school instrumentalists to music and mirth on our historic college campus. Over our first nine years, hundreds of campers have spent a summer week on the Penn campus honing their craft with the staff and students of the Penn Band, playing a broad and varied repertoire of band music, including both traditional band repertory and contemporary music.
Students not only enjoy applied musicianship in a collegiate setting, but also received guest lectures and leadership training from the Penn Band staff. The staff of this camp is comprised of the students and staff of the University of Pennsylvania Band.
These camps include multiple performances both on- and off- campus, at venues such as the University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the Philadelphia Phillies, the National Constitution Center, the Trenton Thunder and the Camden Riversharks.
Students stay in the campus dorms, eat in the cafeterias, enjoy the amenities of the Penn campus and off-campus excursions, are supervised by staff and college student counselors from the Penn Band, and receive t-shirts and digital recordings of their performances.
Enrollment is open to all high school students (grades 8-12) – auditions are not required.
Financial support is made
available for those with demonstrated need.
We perform a diverse repertoire of challenging and gratifying band
music. A low student to instructor ratio is maintained to insure a high
level of instruction and attention to each student. Our program includes
guest lectures on topics in student leadership, group-building, and
conducting. Most importantly, we provide a fun and rewarding experience
that the students will always remember.
Our summer camp program is in its 9th year here in Philadelphia. Yet
another great program is taking shape – one not to be missed! From
fantastic music in our modern facilities to fun activities on-campus and
in the city to great performance opportunities, our program promises
students a rewarding experience that will not be found anywhere else!
As one of the oldest and most active college band
programs in the country, the Penn Band prides itself on its unique blend
of tradition, good music, and good fun – a blend found no where else. We
encourage you to also visit the group’s website at
www.pennband.net to
learn more about our 115 year-old organization.
