The
2011 Camp Counselors
Robin
Acker (Flute) is a rising Senior at the University of
Pennsylvania. She finds herself with a full schedule of classes and
work between majoring in Nursing and minoring in Music, but she
spends all of her free time with the Penn Band. She is one of the
current Drum Majors of the Penn Band, and when not conducting she
generally dances and sings until she either can't move anymore or
doesn't have a voice. Robin is from Hamden, Connecticut, and is
super excited to be a counselor for the first time, and can't wait
to have an awesome time in Philly with everyone!
Joe Becker (Tuba) is a rising
Sophomore at the
University of Pennsylvania. He has been playing the tuba for
6
years and has been part of prestigious groups such as the
All-South Jersey Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Joe is from
Voorhees, New Jersey which is a half hour away from Penn. He was
part of marching band and wind ensemble at his high school.
As a student, Joe plans to major in Biology and possibly minor
in Music with the hopes of eventually becoming a doctor. He is
a dedicated member of the Penn Band and its tuba section!
Jen Sackowski (Alto Sax)
Jen Sackowski is a
rising Junior at the University of Pennsylvania. After two years of
being tormented by the School of Engineering and Applied Science, she
has recently transferred to the School of Arts and Sciences and is a
Biology major and a Math minor. Along with her whirlwind love affair
with the Penn Band, Jen also enjoys being on the Synchronized Swimming
team and running various Newman Catholic Center events. She plays the
alto saxophone and is crazy super excited for this summer's Band Camp!
The 2011
Counselors-In-Training
Emily
Dunay (Oboe) is a rising Freshman at the University of
Pennsylvania. She has played the oboe for 7 years and also plays
the piano. Emily is from Nashville, Tennessee, and plans to major
in Biochemistry and minor in Music. In the future she hopes to
become a wildlife veterinarian. She also plays tennis and plans to
play on the campus tennis team at Penn.
Samantha
Rehrig (Flute) just graduated from Camden Catholic High School
and will be attending Misericordia University in the fall.
Misericordia has a great academic program, but it's Band Camp is
sorely lacking, so Sam decided to return to Penn and harass the
trumpet players for yet another summer. The fate of the newly
instituted "junior counselor" concept at camp rests in her hands,
and quite frankly, she is reveling in the power this fact grants to
her. When she's not in camp, Sam can be found watching movies
(mostly about vampires and wizards), learning an audible instrument
(the alto saxophone), and reviewing the Benajmin Moore color wheel
in search of shades she has not yet colored her hair.
The
2011 Resident Clinicians
Steven Birmingham (Trumpet) has a BA in Economics and an MSE
in the Management of Technology from UPenn. He has lived in
Switzerland and France, and currently resides in Harrisburg, PA
where he serves as Information Technology Director at a small
regional college. Steven is a former Vice-president of the Penn
Band and a member of the Band's honor society, Fanfare. He often
teaches college courses and gives seminars on communications,
leadership, negotiations, and project management. When not
traveling, speaking, or working, Steven can be found in the
kitchen, in an online game, or hanging out with friends.
Brian Greenberg
(Trumpet) graduated from Penn in 1991, but has yet to
successfully leave the Penn Band (not that he's trying). He is
a familiar face at Homecoming, Alumni Day, the occasional Penn
Basketball game and yes, Band Camp. When he's not finding
excuses to break out his trumpet in Philadelphia, he serves as a
Director in Bank of America's IT organization. And while he
maintains he had nothing to do with all that Wall Street
unpleasantness a couple of years ago, it's entirely possible
that he knows the PIN number on our ATM card, so we try to leave
him alone about it. Like last year, he hopes to combine his
technical know-how with his love of the Penn Band to simulate an
actual Penn Band halftime show on Franklin Field with the Band
Camp campers.
Jeff
Porten [Clarinet] graduated from Penn in 1990, and thanks to
several incomplete master's degrees, has variously been a member of
the classes of 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1995. Thanks to a parental unit
who worked at Penn, he's been toddling around campus since roughly
1971, when all of the buildings and students were much taller. He's
an itinerant IT consultant and freelance writer, and so far this
year has lived in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and
Washington DC.
And
of course, The Penn Band Staff (Dr. G, Mr. Cheeseman (Director of
the Penn Band), and Mr. Sherr (Asst. Director)!!
