Mei Ling, like several other PennYos, hails from sunny Singapore. Her first time in Penn was her first time ever in the USA, but she has since un-F.O.B.-ified herself, and now more-than-happily joins in various (but not all) sorts of American fun.
Mei Ling never really expected herself to end up with PennYo. While she spent a fair amount of her time in Singapore singing, dancing and performing, she decided in freshman year to focus on dance in college, and now still dances with (the very awesome) Strictly Funk. In addition, Mei Ling has never sung in a group, and has also, since the age of ten, barely listened to Chinese music, instead filling her ipod with the likes of ingridmichaelson/paolonutini/amoslee/oasis/coldplay/etc (WOOOO).
Nevertheless, while most of her friends at home gaped at her decision to audition for a chinese acapella group, Mei Ling has been more than pleasantly surprised by the new circumstances she’s fallen into. While singing “doop doo”s and “hoo hoo”s, Mei Ling now gladly joins in PennYo’s after-midnight indomee parties, eighty-message long email threads, and random bursts of song in chinese restaurants. She also senses her Mandarin improving, and concedes that she actually knows more Chinese songs than she thinks she does.
Mei Ling now hopes to get better at the “doop doo”s and the “hoo hoo”s, and to also get better at eating fast, lest PennYo eats all her food at those infamous group dinners. Meanwhile, Mei Ling is just happy to find a new group of friends in PennYo, and promises to someday make the whole group go into an all-asian dance battle while yelling “YO YO YO!” in a very non-asian fashion.
