2009 Individualized Grants and Funding Opportunities
Frequently Asked Questions
Please note that we are still working to update the dates on this page. However, most information should still remain pertinent.
Our External Relations and Fundraising committees have collected general information on grants and funding opportunities at Penn that we believe can aid you in covering costs and that may add to your PIBV summer experience. However, please keep in mind that we have also included grants that may not apply directly to funding for trips; these grants apply to a broad range of activities, may require additional work/study should you receive the grant in the form of an additional project or paper, or may just be related to undergraduate research opportunities in general. Some grants have restrictions, i.e. limited to only undergraduates in the College, etc.
Please click on the name of a funding opportunity below for more information. Make sure to go to the website listed for each funding opportunity, as these websites give more information about eligibility, requirements, the application process, and the application itself. Gelfman International Summer Fund
Details: The Gelfman International Summer Fund has been established to create opportunities for personally enriching international research and/or service for students in the summer between their junior and senior year. The Fund is expected to cover two or three students each summer. Penn juniors from any of Penn’s undergraduate schools and in any discipline are eligible.
Students will be required to participate in a leadership and orientation training prior to travel. This education and training will include strategic planning, time management, African traditions and culture, safety and logistics, and international travel regulations. For example, teaching strategic planning as a mechanism for change will equip students to evaluate the environment. From that evaluation they will develop a vision for improvement, working closely with people in Africa as Dr. Shoemaker has done.
In summer 2009 up to three students will be awarded travel grants of up to $2,000 each to underwrite expenses related to traveling and working in Africa. Up to two grants will be awarded to eligible undergraduate students from the Class of 2010 or 2011, and any graduate or professional student. The other is available only to a SP2 student. The Open Mind for Africa program offers a unique service experience in Africa. In addition to the leadership and training orientation prior to the immersion experience, participants will be involved in Open Mind for Africa development activities upon their return to Penn.

Terry B. Heled Travel & Research Writing Grant
Details: As a way of memorializing her mother, Terry B. Heled, and of honoring the students of her alma mater in gratitude for the encouragement her own research and writing received while she was at Penn, Mali Heled Kinberg (C'95) has created this endowed fund at the Kelly Writers House that, each summer, will enable a student to travel for the purpose of conducting the research that will lead to a significant writing project.
The winner of the Heled Travel Grant will receive $2,000 toward the costs of travel for research. The travel and research will be conducted during the summer (between mid-May and the end of August). Candidates who propose a trip of longer rather than shorter duration will be given priority, and candidates who propose to travel beyond North America will also get priority, but any travel plan--to any place, of any length--will receive serious consideration based on the quality of the project.
The proposed project must entail research using archives, facilities, people (e.g. those to be interviewed), materials, or terrain that can only be found at the travel destination(s). Applicants who can describe such resources in detail will be at an advantage. The proposed research experience should lead specifically to a writing project of some kind. (Students researching topics in non-humanities subjects are welcome to apply, but note that the result of the research should be a significant piece of writing.)

The Hassenfeld Grants for Undergraduate Research in Urban Studies are designed to support students who know their direction for senior seminar prior to carry out summer research that will be used for their senior seminar papers. There are a number of models for taking advantage of the opportunity and students should talk with Elaine Simon or Eric Schneider before applying for Hassenfeld funding. Grants of up to $2000 for summer research and expenses are awarded to students each year on a competitive basis.
